Lead Physician

Details of the offer

Primary Patient Care:
* In specialized or primary care areas of clinical expertise, primarily examines, diagnoses, and treats patients, including those referred by Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants. Diagnose illnesses and prescribe and administer medical treatment, including medication abortion services.
* Counsel students on related medical/personal problems and health measures and refers, when appropriate, to other health care professionals for diagnosis and treatment.
* Exhibit concern for both quality and cost of care; deliver quality patient-centered care with compassion; emphasize patient education when possible, including prevention and self-care; refer patients to Health Promotion for additional educational activities.
* Treat and follow up on treatment to ensure appropriate resolution of illness or injury; consult with private physicians and public agencies in securing treatment for students requiring services beyond those available on the campus.
* Maintain medical records with honesty and integrity; provide service in both private office and acute care setting; provide services during noon and evening hours of operation.
* Skilled in time management and exhibits flexibility to maximize patient service.
* Maintain broad privilege list in the credentialing process and exhibits a willingness to see a wide range of medical conditions; coordinate with campus Counseling Services and staff Psychiatrist for those patients presenting with mental health problems.
* Advise professional staff on developing health education and preventive medical care programs; participate in specialty clinics and staff conferences.
* As assigned and privileged, may perform minor surgery which does not require general anesthesia.
Lead Physician
* Serve as a member of the Administrative Leadership Team; provide administrative leadership and completes administrative tasks for the clinical staff. Participates in the credentialing and privileging process for all clinicians.
* Facilitates and monitors professional peer review process; ensures that it meets AAAHC standards; provides the Health Records Technician the list of topics to be reviewed in the ensuing year.
* Serve as a consultant to the Director and contributes to performance evaluations of the clinical and ancillary staff.
* Directs, guides and determines schedule for an ongoing internal education process for clinicians, nurses and other health center staff.
* Serves as the Director of Laboratory and Radiology Supervisor unless delegated to another clinical staff member. Provides consultation regarding Pharmacy services.
* Advises the Director on clinical matters, policies affecting patient care and current practices. Represents the clinical staff in the development of written policies and procedures.
* Maintains liaison between the physicians, staff and the Director; serves special clinical functions or as a special consultant to SHS or university staff as needed.
* Consults with SHS physician staff on difficult clinical problems; reviews Incident Reports after evaluation by the Director if deemed necessary and is Chair of the Risk Management Committee.
* Serves on special committees as assigned; writes policies and procedures as needed especially on clinical matters.
* Reviews group physicals such as athletic physicals and international physicals and makes appropriate dispositions.
* Leads and coordinates SHS emergency preparedness to support the campus Emergency Management Program unless delegated to other staff. Leads SHS response to campus health emergencies.
Consults and Mentors
* Provide professional consultant services to Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants on all types of care provided, including medication abortion services; may be requested to serve as a preceptor to Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants.
* Provide professional consultant services to other SHS personnel including nurses, ancillary areas and administration. Documents consultations appropriately.
* Perform professional peer review; reviews medical records consistent with Student Health Services standards.
* Communicates with peers, Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants when indicated in order to obtain positive, productive, and educational results.
Other Assignments:
* May participate in campus health and safety or sanitation program, and may be assigned to serve on Student Health & Wellness Services or campus committees.
* May represent the Student Health & Wellness Services and the university on campus and systemwide committees such as the State Common Drug Formulary Committee, the Pharmacy Advisory Board and campus committees. Other appropriate duties as assigned by the Director.
QUALIFICATIONS
* Possession of a valid and current California license to practice medicine.
* Current medical board certification appropriate to assigned duties, e.g., pediatrics, gynecology, internal medicine, family practice.
* Possession of a current Drug Enforcement Agent license for prescribing physicians.
* Appropriate cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
* Completion of one or more approved residency programs in specialty appropriate to assigned duties; and two years or its equivalent of increasingly responsible experience in the practice of the specialty; prior or current affiliation with a hospital, ambulatory clinic or private practice is desirable.
Thorough knowledge of the principles and methods of board certified medical specialty. Thorough knowledge of community resources in medical treatment and public health practices. Specialized knowledge of diagnosis of common medical disorders and injuries. Knowledge and familiarity with standards and ethics of the California Medical Association and American Medical Association. Ability to skillfully apply principles and techniques of current medical practices in the functional areas to which assigned; provide diagnostic treatment and medical counseling services in a campus medical program. Work effectively with students, administration, staff and faculty. Analyze emergency situations and take prompt action; participate on medical staff committees and work with a variety of medical practitioners and specialists; serve as a mentor and resource consultant for Student Health Services personnel; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others; and provide general medical care as requested; provide leadership to other clinicians to comply with state and federal regulations. Develop and update clinical policies and procedures based on current practices.
Preferred Qualifications
* Knowledgeable in public health practices and procedures and ability to advise campus community in public health matters.
* Experienced in Adolescent Medicine.
* Expertise working in a CLIA waived laboratory setting.
* Certification for x-ray supervisor and operator.
* Proficient in the use of an electronic medical record system, specifically Point N Click.
