To perform all duties related to the preparation, distribution, cataloging, and storage of lab specimens for testing. To adhere to departmental specimen identification policies and quality controls. To utilize lab and hospital information systems and provide general administrative support to the laboratory staff in support of laboratory operations, such as filing, record maintenance, responding to client calls, and mail delivery.
1. Receives, organizes and prepares specimens for analysis in assigned area. Establishes identity of specimens and maintains their storage location for correct identity for subsequent testing. Follows through with special precautions required for handling a particular specimen.
2. Verifies physician orders and patient registration information, updates/deletes/adds tests, discharges temporary case numbers, modifies patient master file, and charges/credits tests through appropriate information system.
3. Maintains laboratory processing area, equipment and instrumentation according to regulatory guidelines and laboratory standard operating procedures. Performs and documents quality control and preventative maintenance with proper documentation.
4. Pulls patient files for laboratory staff performing assays and retrieves specimens from other areas of the hospital, clinic and other institutions as needed.
5. Receives incoming supply orders; labels and dates all appropriate supplies, stores at proper temperature, checks expiration dates and rotates stock as needed.
6. Uses excellent customer service skills, answers incoming telephone calls, handles basic requests and passes complex issues on to the appropriate technologist for those requiring additional information.
7. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Associate's degree in Biological Science or health-related field required, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and / or experience. Depending on the unit/department or if the position works directly with patients, Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required or required to be obtained within 30 days of employment.
