Lab Manager for the Institute of Advanced Materials and Manufacturing (IAMM) Market Range 11, DOE&Q, exempt, full-time
Description: This position manages the Manufacturing Core at University of Tennessee (MCUT). MCUT provides advanced additive and subtractive manufacturing services across UT and external customers. This role will train and manage undergraduate assistants to perform day to day tasks with equipment to fabricating parts. The director must have a deep understanding of safety, management, and operations within a manufacturing environment, as well as demonstrated ability for fabricating complex components. This position will manage financial aspects of the core facility, both month-to-month and FY, generate core facility performance reports for IAMM and ORIED, develop cost structures for billable services, and participate in long-range & strategic planning for the core facility.
Duties/Responsibilities: Staff oversight - Training and safety (15%) and staff meetings (15%).
This position will manage at least 5 undergraduate assistants to perform day to day operations at MCUT. This will require regular training, meetings, and oversight to ensure a safe manufacturing environment and high quality components are fabricated.
-Perform regular training on additive and subtractive manufacturing equipment
-Ensure safety standards are up to requirements within EHS
-Meet regularly with staff
-Oversee the search and hiring of new undergraduate assistants
-Supervise staff directly as needed
Job oversight - Job management (15%) and consulting (15%).
This role requires processing of a large influx of jobs with varying needs.
-Meet with potential customers to review projects
-Determine feasibility of projects
-Aid in redesign of projects as needed (design for manufacturing)
-Disperse job tasks to undergraduate assistants
-Manage website to streamline job ordering process
-Properly gather customer information for reporting & billing
Fabrication (10%) and maintenance (10%)
Certain high value or high risk jobs may need to be fabricated by the director.
-Operate additive and subtractive manufacturing equipment for high risk jobs or if staff is unavailable
-Properly maintain machinery to minimize downtime and reduce costs
Core oversight - Growth and logging (17%) and ordering supplies (3%)
Growth of MCUT is anticipated, which will require excellent book keeping.
-Plan growth and future of MCUT based on needs and guidance from IAMM
-Log job data and build yearly reports of usage
-Review and edit MCUT's budget and rates based on usage
-Work with undergraduate assistant on ordering supplies
-Oversee occasional lab demos for engineering courses
-Perform tours as needed

Qualifications
Education and Experience: Required: Associate's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related - At least three years of experience operating manufacturing equipment
Preferred: Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related - At least one year of experience managing a manufacturing space and at least one year of experience overseeing and training staff
Required Skills and Abilities: -Skilled in operation of additive and subtractive manufacturing equipment
-Skilled in CAD/CAM programming
-Ability to oversee undergraduate employees
-Ability to smoothly manage incoming job requests
-Skilled in balancing customer needs and deadlines
-Ability to develop, implement, and follow Standard Operating Protocols (SOPs)
Minimum Required Skills and Abilities: -Demonstrated skill in design for manufacturing
-Knowledge of safety and experience in a manufacturing environment
