Job Title: Firefighter
Candidates are required to complete the Firefighter exam and Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA) by November 27, 2022. Kansas City residency is required by 9 months from the date of appointment for this position. Kansas City Missouri residents are eligible to test at no cost and are eligible for one basic orientation (practice test) at no cost.
Salary: $20.11 starting hourly rate - varies based on assigned schedule
Summary: This is skilled firefighting work in preventing, combating, and extinguishing fires, answering emergency calls, and in the operation of departmental equipment and the routine custodial maintenance of quarters. Work involves training for and participating in duties of protecting life and property through the performance of firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical activity. Employees of this class are required to learn and participate in the operation of apparatus and performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions, which may require strenuous exertion under such handicaps as smoke, fire, heat, and cramped surroundings. Although firefighting, emergency rescue work, and emergency medical care constitute the primary and more responsible areas of work, the major portion of assigned work is spent drilling and studying firefighting methods, evolutions, and techniques, as well as routine duties in the custodial care and minor maintenance of departmental facilities, apparatus, and equipment. Work is usually performed in accordance with explicit instructions and well-defined procedures; however, the performance of the work requires initiative, a thorough understanding of firefighting and prevention principles and methods, and emergency medical care.
Job Requirements
Age : At least 18 years of age by the application deadline, and not more than 30 years of age on the last date that applications are accepted by the Human Resource Department for such positions during the recruitment period that is prior to the assembling of an eligibility list for the position. In computing the age of a person, the total length of the time that the person has previously served as a member of the Kansas City Fire Department may be deducted from the person's actual age. This shall not apply to a person over 45 years of age.
High School Grad/GED : Requires high school diploma or GED
Valid MISSOURI Driver's License : Must possess a valid driver's license at time of application and within 9 months of employment must possess and maintain a valid state of Missouri driver's license.
Academy Certification :
Must take and pass state Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) examination.
Must obtain and a Kansas City defibrillator license issued by the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department.
Must also take and pass Missouri State Firefighter I & II Haz-Mat Awareness and Operations Certifications.
Must successfully complete the Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) or have certification of completion of the CPAT from a certified agency dated within 1 year prior to appointment
Other Requirements :
Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and post offer physical.
Must pass a background check as prescribed by the City
