Job Description:Summary:The person in this position will be part of an innovative geotechnical engineering team of over 80 geotechnical engineers and field geologists. Barr's geotechnical engineering team provides a wide array of services related to foundations, dams, embankments, landslides, soil-structure interaction, earth-retaining structures, excavations, and underground structures. We also offer geotechnical services for ground improvement, geotechnical modeling, instrumentation and monitoring, in-situ testing, geophysics, soil dynamics and earthquake engineering, geosynthetics, and groundwater and seepage.Key Responsibilities:Performing fieldwork such as construction observation, material testing, surveying, and subsurface investigationsOverseeing on-site and in-laboratory material testingPerforming geotechnical field investigations, including collecting field samples and performing field logging of exploratory test boringsPerforming engineering investigation and design support tasks under the direction of senior engineering professionalsDeveloping field data in support of geotechnical investigations and designTraveling for periodic out-of-town assignmentsThis internship is for 6 months (preferred months are between May-December 2024). All applications must include transcripts.Minimum Qualifications:GPA of 3.2/4.0Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skillsAt least two semesters of physics and three semesters of mathematicsOngoing enrollment in an ABET-accredited civil, geotechnical, or geological engineering degree programFamiliarity with Microsoft Windows OS and Microsoft Office softwareConscientiousness concerning the accuracy, appropriateness, and timeliness of resultsThorough, organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated approachAbility to lift 30 poundsLegal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the futurePossession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving recordAbility to rent a car for out-of-town assignmentsPreferred Qualifications:GPA of 3.5/4.0Familiarity with gINT and modeling software, such as GeoStudio, FLAC, or PlaxisCompleted at least one semester of upper division (junior/senior level) engineering courseworkA hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of our Minneapolis, Minnesota, office.NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites or working on tall structures or with industrial equipment.
