Instrument Technician - Utilities & Energy Services Job Summary
To perform duties requiring a high degree of skill in the installation, diagnosing, servicing, maintenance, repair and calibration of various pneumatic, electrical, electronic, and mechanical instruments and controls and control systems.
Duties & Responsibilities Installs, repairs, and adjusts indicating, recording, integrating, regulating and control instruments, and processor based equipment, such as pressure meters, temperature indicators, flow and combustion meters, gauges and control equipment, flow control devices, and environmental monitoring equipment. Calibrates instruments to coincide with established standards and calculates and calibrates when standards are not available. Disassembles instruments, and controls, and examines mechanisms, clean parts, replaces worn or broken parts, assembles instruments, and checks the monitoring/testing apparatus. Disconnects inaccurate or damaged instruments and makes suitable replacement parts. Assists other members of the plant including operations, maintenance, Controls Engineer, Contractors, and Vendors, when needed, including in the design and implementation of instrumentation, controls, and automation hardware and computer software systems. Conducts scheduled inspections of all instruments and makes minor adjustment to those not functioning properly. Operates, repairs, and maintains emission monitoring systems and equipment. Processes data used for reporting to outside agencies. Stores, repairs, and maintains in operating condition, special testing apparatus such as Orsats, potentiometer, pitot tubes, thermocouples, manometers and other numerous special testing equipment. Configures, troubleshoots, and repairs automation systems, Distributed Control systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems, electrical/electronic controls, sensors, transducers, and printed circuit boards. Cleans power plant equipment and work areas as required. Supervises assigned personnel and contractor personnel as required. Other duties as assigned. Additional Physical Demands
DIFFICULTY:
A. Complexity
Must understand involved and interconnected steam, water, and electrical systems. Must be able to determine problems and solve them. Must insure safe working conditions for the plant. Must be able to react to rapidly changing conditions. Employee may become deeply involved in the troubleshooting of all plant equipment and interrelationship between Power Plant and campus steam systems. Advances in electronic components and installation of other components brings increased responsibility to keep abreast of operating procedures, maintenance and troubleshooting to the Power Plant as well as campus system.
B. Scope and Effect
Work performed in this class is directly reflected in the reliability of the Power Plant. This includes constant supply of steam and electricity to most of the campus buildings. Duties of this class affect all buildings on campus receiving electricity or steam from Abbott Power Plant. Must be able to work in conjunction with other classes directly involved in the satisfactory operation of the Power Plant as well as the campus system.
PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
A. Personal Contacts
Multiple daily contact with all maintenance people and most operating personnel. Occasional contact by phone and in person with F&S shops, wholesalers in community and factory representatives of equipment used and service representatives.
B. Purpose
Communication between above named personnel for equipment, supplies or answers to problems concerning the operation of the Power Plant.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
A. Physical Requirements
*General good health.
*Includes work on five levels of the Power Plant. Must be able to climb stairs, lift of equipment, work in close quarters, move rapidly in some situations; stamina and perseverance are required.
*Must be able to walk, climb, bend, and crawl in order to gain access to or perform the work of an electrician in areas such as attics, crawl spaces, false floors, ceilings, poles, and scaffolding.
*Must be able to lift related equipment overhead and hold it for prolonged periods of time due to the overhead placement of construction materials such as conduit and fixtures.
*Must be able to lift related equipment and material; such as large panels and motors.
*Able to move rapidly in emergency situations.
*Physical stamina and strength required.
*Respirators may be required while performing the duties described.
*Mental stress is a factor in this job.
Constant is defined as performing a task 500+/day or 67-100% of the work day
Frequent is defined as performing a task 101-500x/day or 34-66% of the work day
Occasional is defined as performing a task 1-100x/day or 1-33% of the work day

Minimum Qualifications Two years (24 months) of work experience comparable to the Steam and Power Plant II or III or comparable experience as a Plant Operating Engineer. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Must have a complete understanding of all power plant equipment, including how it works and its functionality. Skill in mechanical drafting, reading blueprint reading, reading flow diagrams, and reading manufacturers' instruction manuals. Working knowledge of digital controls, pneumatic controls, electricity, and electronics. Familiar with normal sounds and operating conditions of power plant equipment. Ability to give and follow directions. Knowledge of safety procedures. Appointment Information


This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4995 - Instrument Technician position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 6/17/2024. The salary for this position is $47.17 per hour.
