The Biome School The Biome is a tuition-free, k-5, public charter school that provides a unique academic experience for children who live in the City of St. Louis. Biome students are actively involved in their own learning and are integral to the development of new ideas and ways of thinking. The school's learner-centered, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) framework guides instruction across disciplines and provides students with rigorous and holistic academic experiences. The learning environment, characterized by high expectations, differentiated instruction, relentless encouragement, and student support is critical to the academic, social, and emotional progress of Biome learners. Similar to a tropical rainforest biome, which sustains a diverse array of life forms, The Biome School supports the diverse academic interests, skills, and needs of each individual learner.
Position Description The Instructional Coach is a critical lever in improving student achievement. The role of the coach is to build teacher capacity and help teachers understand and implement evidence-based instructional practices. An instructional coach is a learner who models continuous improvement, engages in their own lifelong learning, and works to develop a high-level understanding of The Biome's curriculum and instructional pedagogy. Instructional coaches promote reflection, provide guidance and structure, and focus on strengths, collaboration, and issues of concern. They are responsible for ensuring high-quality instruction in classrooms through modeling, co-planning, co-teaching, and providing feedback to teachers. The instructional coach demonstrates and models a passion for leading students to their highest achievement.
Responsibilities and Duties Support the development of teachers related to The Biome curriculum, instruction, and data analysis Assist teachers with the planning and pacing of lessons as well as the development of differentiated lessons Provide direction regarding pedagogy, instructional initiatives, and evidence-based best practices Model or co-teach lessons in classrooms Assist teachers with materials related to instruction and the curriculum Informally observe (non-evaluative) lessons and provide feedback Develop coaching plans for teachers to ensure improvement Regularly share pertinent data/coaching documentation to the principal Help develop a community of teacher-learners Qualifications Must hold a valid Missouri Teaching Certificate Minimum of 5 years teaching experience Has a record of positively impacting learning and achievement for students Proven ability to work collaboratively with colleagues Experience using student-level data to inform instructional decisions Strong pedagogical knowledge and content expertise Desire to engage in consistent professional learning
