JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking a motivated and dedicated individual to join our Placement team as a HUBS (Humans United for Better Sustainability) Program Specialist. This role is pivotal in supporting our sustainability initiatives and advancing our 2030 Sustainability Roadmap goals. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, a deep understanding of Burning Man culture, and experience in project management and coordination across teams. This role reports directly to the Associate Director of City Planning and also complies with all guidance and direction given by the Net Zero BRC Participant Support Working Group and the Director of Regeneration.  
This is a temporary, part-time, non-exempt role running from May to December, 2024. This role is remote-flexible with preference given to candidates located near Burning Man Project's operations in San Francisco, CA or Reno, NV. The role will be onsite based in Black Rock City, Nevada from approximately August - September 2024. The deadline to apply for this role is 5:00 pm Pacific on Tuesday, May 28th, 2024.
DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
PERCENTAGE OF TIME SPENT
Provide guidance and support to camp organizers in Black Rock City and develop a needs assessment for HUBS and related camps (50%) Organize and implement (and develop where needed) coordinated strategies to promote environmental stewardship and camp collaboration within HUBS. Develop educational materials, instructional guides, and workshops that can scale sustainable practices and infrastructure in camps. Offer expertise on best practices for waste reduction, carbon offsets, renewable power, transportation, and eco-friendly camp infrastructure and operations. Address any challenges or concerns related to sustainability within camps. Liaise with HUBS Liaisons to accelerate the Placement process for larger participant endeavors. Support resource-sharing network to help camps connect and partner. Advise Placers and Mapping Support staff of Placement Team on the placement of hubs Complete other duties as assigned

  Assist camp organizers in connecting with Outside Site Service (OSS) providers (15%) Identify and liaise with vendors providing rentals for sustainable technology. Work with OSS and Placement to develop a process enabling camps to better collectivize their infrastructure and realize sustainable solutions. Help the Net Zero BRC working groups determine potential BMP support for HUBS for more sustainable participation.

  Collaborate with internal teams (15%) Ensure alignment with sustainability goals and initiatives across departments. Provide updates and communicate progress on sustainability initiatives to relevant stakeholders. Encourage participation by camp leaders in our emissions data collection processes to support annual reporting.

  Track and report on the progress of sustainability initiatives undertaken by Participants (15%) Monitor metrics related to waste diversion, energy usage, and carbon footprint reduction. Generate reports and presentations to communicate the impact of sustainability efforts.

  Act as a liaison between Burning Man Project and external partners (5%) Cultivate relationships with external stakeholders, vendors, and partners involved in sustainability initiatives including Green Theme Camp Community. Facilitate communication and collaboration to advance shared sustainability goals.
LEARNING AND TEACHING
  Documentation - Drives the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to assigned duties. Teaching – Takes a leadership role in the acculturation and training of staff. Teaches live or e-learning classes, as requested. Promotes a culture of teaching and learning throughout the community. Mentoring - Mentors subordinates in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and experience that will allow them to advance in the organization. Aids, encourages and inspires their team. Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested. Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. Participates in conferences, forums, and networking events, where appropriate. Speaking – Represents Burning Man as a subject matter expert and culture-bearer, as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
Ability to participate in key internal meetings, and manage professional responses to a large inflow of questions in a timely manner. Ability to adjust schedule seasonally to work at the Burning Man event held in Nevada. Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Project Management, Communications, or related field (or equivalent experience). Strong understanding of Burning Man culture, principles, and ethos. Proven experience in project management and coordination, preferably in a nonprofit or community-based organization. Comfortability with collecting, analyzing, and presenting data sets. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholders. Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. PREFERRED
It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture and operating a camp in Black Rock City. An understanding of key technology innovation, camp infrastructure needs and operations, and ability to guide camps in the right direction Note: If you have gained the necessary experience to succeed in this role and have acquired this experience in other ways, we encourage you to apply and share all relevant experience in your application.
REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
Valid driver's license and a good driving record. COMPENSATION: 
Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated pay rate for this position is $35.00 to $45.00 per hour . PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
Off-playa: Work is primarily sedentary in nature; no special demands are required. On-playa: Work is primarily sedentary but will also include the need to find and meet with department and camp representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation.  Some of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
