Rate of Pay: Minimum salary $62,000 ($29.81/hour) + Grounds Stipend ($2,080) Position Outcomes:
The Grounds Manager position is responsible for the exterior operation and maintenance at the Winnetka and Northfield campuses, and three off-campus sites: Transition Center, Duke Childs Field and Fox Meadow Field. This includes supervising a team of hourly staff and supervisors to create well-maintained, clean, and attractive grounds for students, staff and visitors. This role serves both to manage the grounds team and to perform work to maintain the grounds. The role of the Grounds Manager includes managerial, organizational, and technical components. This individual will be responsible for the overall cleanliness of exterior school district facilities, field preparation and maintenance, help organize special events and setups, and coordinate with contractors and vendors. Additional responsibilities include interaction with the general public, athletic directors, coaches, players and event organizers. Qualifications: 4-6 years of experience in a related field. Ability to secure and maintain an Illinois State Pesticide Application License within one year of hire. Strong managerial and organizational skills; experience managing and developing staff is preferred. Previous training and education in athletic fields and field lining is preferred. Knowledge of grounds equipment required along with athletic field equipment operation preferred. Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of supplies, equipment and inventory control. Self-motivated and directed. Strong attention to detail. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Proven analytical, evaluative and problem-solving abilities. Exemplary interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly and distinctly with staff, students, parents, and outside agencies. Exceptional customer service focus. Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize work, interact professionally with numerous individuals in a high-pressure environment, meet frequent deadlines. Ability to exercise a high degree of confidentiality, good judgment and discretion, with an established record of integrity. Experience with field re-sodding and re-grading. Knowledge and understanding of the safe handling, application, and storage of fertilizers, pesticides, and related athletic turf chemicals and materials. Physical ability to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time, move around frequently in office areas as well as in various other areas of the building including roofs, air handlers and other areas that are not easily accessible. Position Expectations Management Maintains attractive, safe, and sanitary buildings and grounds for school purposes at the most economical costs. Ensure outdoor education facilities, sidewalks, parking lots, turf, shrubbery, trees and other outdoor improvements are maintained in a safe and functional condition at a level acceptable to the school and community. Supervise and coordinate the work of the grounds staff. Schedules all grounds-related preventative maintenance needs and required annual inspections. Adheres to the annual budget and provides input to the Director of Physical Plant Services on a long-range grounds operation plan. Procures parts and supplies necessary for daily outdoor operations of District facilities and equipment. Train all grounds staff members in techniques to maintain athletic fields. Provides input to the Director of Physical Plant Services for projects where contractors, architects or other professionals are employed. Assists the Director of Physical Plant Services with the review of architectural drawings and specifications. Assists the Director of Physical Plant Services with on-site inspections during construction projects to insure that specifications and plans are being adhered to. Provides input to the Director of Physical Plant Services on requests for payment. Develop a snow removal/call-in plan with PPS personnel for all district properties. This plan includes proper training on snow removal equipment, alerting plan, expectations if called in and assignments for call-ins. Reports serious problems to the Facilities Manager. Grounds Maintenance Performs daily field preparation for field activities, litter cleanup, restroom cleanup, and stadium. Provides immediate attention to non-scheduled problems. Operates equipment including chalk liners, line painters, drags, blowers, mowers, riding mowers, line trimmers, field sweepers, pressure washers and a variety of hand tools and hand power tools. Operates automotive equipment such as pickup trucks with trailer attachments, small dump trucks to haul dirt, gravel, etc and as needed, small tractors with 3 point attachments (Category 1 & 2) and small backhoes. Perform athletic field and grounds maintenance including mowing, aerating, topdressing, seeding, sodding, trimming, field painting, irrigation and turf care, fertilizing; spray chemicals including insecticides, herbicides, soil conditioners and related chemicals; follow proper safety precautions; installation and care of trees and shrubs, proper pruning techniques and tree removal. Applies pesticides in accordance with city, state and federal regulations. Inspects grounds, facilities, and buildings on a daily basis, looking for safety concerns and maintenance needs. Completes damage report and notifies supervisor of needed repairs. Operates manual and automatic irrigation systems as required. Assists in maintenance and repair of irrigation and drainage systems. Athletic Fields Ensures preparation of game areas for athletic contests. Determines field conditions (i.e. playability of the field). Prepares initial layout or set-up of athletic fields and maintains fields according to specifications of scheduled events, including football, baseball, softball, soccer, track, etc. Maintain synthetic turf fields. Coordinate facility rentals with the Operations Managers, Athletics and the Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations. Performs other duties as assigned. FLSA: Non-Exempt
