ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Manage, direct, plan and prioritize overall operations and work of forensic unit staff. Develop and implement goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for providing forensic services; prepare and implement policies and procedures. Select, train, motivate, and evaluate departmental personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies, implement discipline procedures. Develop, implement and coordinate procedures in response to department, state and federal policies and work towards goals, vision, and expectation of the police department; interpret, clarify, explain and apply department policy and procedures, business practices, federal or state laws and regulations. Prepare and administer the Forensic Unit budget; make budgetary recommendations and monitor expenditures; order equipment and supplies to meet department needs. Perform public relations functions, make presentations to community organizations; testify in court as an expert witness. Provide professional expertise, direction, and staff support to the police department, other divisions and outside agencies. Analyze and evaluate crime data; maintain records and prepare reports; complete special assignments and report results, perform research, gather information regarding complaints and resolve. Provide instruction to police officers and crime scene investigators. Serve as liaison for the Forensic Unit with other City departments, divisions, road technicians and outside agencies. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Six years of increasingly responsible experience in crime scene investigation, forensic photography, friction ridge examination, or a related forensic field including at least two years of lead or supervisory responsibility. Training: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in forensic science, criminal justice or a related field. LICENSING & CERTIFICATIONS:
Required: Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license and ability to maintain insurability. IAI Crime Scene Investigator or leadership experience in a forensic discipline. Preferred: IAI Senior Crime Scene Analyst certification. From the time of closing, the selection process is anticipated to last approximately 4 - 6 weeks. The process will consist of a panel interview with the selected candidate being subject to a pre-employment drug screen, a background investigation, driving history check and a polygraph/CVSA to be conducted by the Police Department.
