Job Description First Assistant Engineer – Training Vessel

POSITION OVERVIEW
Employee reports to the Chief Engineer of the Training Ship - State of Maine (TSSOM) and assumes duties as
assigned by the Chief Engineer. Employee will supervise other ship's engineers and unlicensed ship engineering
personnel. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in the education and training of
license program students as assigned. This includes cooperating with the Chief Mate in the running of the student
maintenance program. The successful candidate must possess a B. S. Degree and U. S. Coast Guard First Assistant
Engineer's License (unlimited H.P., motor) with applicable STCW certificates. The successful candidate should have
recent experience with propulsion diesel engines, waste heat recovery systems, and related auxiliary machinery.
DUTIES
? Report to the Chief Engineer concerning areas of responsibility.
? Assists the Chief Engineer with implementation and administration of planned maintenance
program.
? May be required to teach up to 6 credits each semester and participate on relevant faculty
and Academy committees as assigned by the Dean of Maritime Training and the Provost.
? Responsible to the Chief Engineer for compliance with all Environmental Health and Safety, and
vessel Safety Management Systems.
? Participates in Academy committees as assigned.
? Conducts training and practical drills in emergency operations including engine room evacuation,
engine room firefighting, and machinery casualties.
? Recommend action in case of personnel or equipment problems.
? Carry out various administrative functions.
? Coordinate all training vessel engine department personnel assignments, leaves and
working schedules.
? Assist the Chief Engineer in analyzing needs and plan preventive maintenance programs
and upgrades for systems, and successfully implement and administer the ship's planned
maintenance system.
? Assists in overseeing cadet engine training, including "hands on" instruction, as coordinated by the
Chief Engineer.
? Available for call-ins while training vessel is in Castine.
? Position includes mandatory annual training cruise(s) and other sea duty including shipyard
periods away from Castine.
? First Assistant Engineer is expected to be actively onboard while the ship is in port.
? Supervises both student and regular Academy employees (Engineering crew).
? Other duties may be assigned. Preferred and Required QualificationsSKILLS
? Excellent organization skills
? Ability to prioritize and to handle multiple projects simultaneously
? Good written, verbal and interpersonal skills required; ability to interact with all levels of staff
including management
? Recent operational experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
? Strong supervisory skills to manage both staff and students
? Strong customer service skills
? Professional presentation, appearance and work ethic
? Ability to work irregular / extended hours/weeks, including night and weekend duties as required
? Sufficient computer skills to operate shipboard and other automated systems
? Knowledge of Windows Microsoft Office Suite
? Ability to work in a student-oriented training environment
? Ability to teach college-level courses related to shipboard engineering and general marine
engineering

REQUIREMENTS
? Minimum of Bachelor's Degree; Master's preferred
? U.S. Coast Guard Unlimited Horsepower/Motor Chief Engineer license with STCW endorsement
? 2 years of maritime experience as First Assistant Engineer or military equivalent preferred
? Experience with maintenance tracking software such as NS5 or similar databases
? Prior teaching experience preferred
? Current Drug-Free screening certificate and proof of current USCG physical (within last 12 months)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
? The physical requirements as outlined in the NVIC 04-08, as updated periodically by the U.S. Coast
Guard, are herein incorporated.
? Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or
up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
? Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs
and/or hands and arms.
? Tolerate exposure to extreme weather conditions including, rain, snow, sleet and high
winds and extremes of temperatures.
? Use hands to manipulate objects, tools or controls.
? Reach and work overhead with arms and hands.
? Open and close water tight doors of 55 pounds or more.
? Work in areas of highs noise and or low light.
? Work aloft at heights above 6 ft.
? Work in confined spaces.

? Must participate in USCG drug testing program
