Finance Director
We're on the lookout for a Finance Director to join us at the Alliance for Youth Organizing (alongside our sister 501(c)(4) organization, the Alliance for Youth Action). As our Finance Director, you'll play a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth financial operations of our organization behind the scenes. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, you'll oversee day-to-day financial management and lead our talented Finance Manager. This is a full-time exempt position based in the United States (see Logistics section below). It's worth noting that the Alliance for Youth Organizing operates as a unionized workplace, with staff represented by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, Local 32035; however, this position falls outside of the bargaining unit.

Our Affiliates and Partners spearhead large-scale voter registration drives, mobilize the youth vote, nurture emerging young leaders, and champion progressive causes close to our generation's heart. Our national team empowers this grassroots work by securing national resources, building local capacity, seeding new initiatives, and coordinating impactful issue campaigns.
Job Responsibilities
As Finance Director, you'll tackle a diverse array of responsibilities, including:
Financial Operations Management:
- Overseeing day-to-day financial operations, including supervision of internal finance management and external bookkeeping teams.
- Directing grant and revenue management processes, ensuring compliance with grant, funder, and contract requirements.
- Developing and refining financial management systems, processes, and policies as needed.
- Leading monthly financial reporting efforts, ensuring accuracy and quality across organizational budgets and cash trackers.
Financial Planning & Reporting:
- Leading annual financial audits and ensuring timely IRS 990 filings.
- Collaborating with Executive Management on annual budgeting processes and financial planning.
- Managing budget forecasting and reforecasting needs, providing real-time financial insights to senior management.
- Preparing financial reports for staff, leadership, board, and funders, in partnership with the CFO.
Administration:
- Overseeing grants and contracts documentation and administration, ensuring compliance with financial and legal requirements.
- Managing the fiscal sponsorship program and state charitable registrations.
- Leading efforts to streamline internal financial processes and procedures.
People Management:
- Supervising and guiding staff members in achieving organizational goals.
- Supporting team members' professional development and growth.
- Collaborating with the CFO to optimize management processes and practices.
Key Qualifications & Experience
We're seeking candidates with strengths in the following areas:
- A background in finance, accounting, or related fields, with relevant work experience or certifications.
- Working knowledge of GAAP, audits, and nonprofit financial regulations.
- Proficiency in Excel and Google Sheets.
- Experience in budget management and financial forecasting.
- Familiarity with nonprofit legal structures and compliance.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
- Proactive mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement.
- Advocate for diversity, equity, and social justice.
- Passion for youth organizing and our mission.
Logistics
- Compensation: $90,000 - $100,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
- Benefits: We offer a competitive benefits package covering medical, dental, vision insurance, retirement contributions, professional development opportunities, generous paid time off, and more.
- Location: This is a full-time position based in the United States, requiring proximity to airports with frequent flights to DC and our network locations.
- Travel: Domestic travel may be required, up to 15% of the position.
- COVID-19: Vaccination and booster requirements are mandatory for travel and events.
