Position Summary & Responsibilities: Position Summary: This Engineering Technician Associate position is the entry level for the Engineering Technician class series and is located in Topeka, KS, within the Bureau of Construction and Materials. This position will be a technician in the concrete Section of Physical Tests and will test and evaluate samples submitted to the subsection for concrete strength, freeze and thaw of concrete, verification of QPS, and equipment maintenance. The Engineering Technician is also responsible for testing concrete and maintaining equipment for the lab's AASHTO compliancy credentials.
NOTE: The employee in this position must also maintain Certified Inspection certifications under the KDOT CIT Program as outlined in the Engineering Technician Progression Manual for the specific job path and any additional as outlined by the Senior Manager.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: Tests and evaluates samples submitted to the subsection, creates and prepares mix designs for freeze and thaw tests, enters test data into AWP/Physical Test Diary, determines appropriate testing is performed on each sample, and maintains knowledge of the status of each sample as it progresses through the section. Maintains and repairs equipment used in testing, performs calibrations on testing equipment at regular intervals, and reviews specifications and procedures to determine that laboratory procedure changes are in keeping with the latest revisions of the applicable specifications and procedures. This position is also responsible for contacting manufacturers when necessary for software updates, parts and general information on operation of the instruments, as well as for contacting field personnel, materials suppliers/producers, and other departments within KDOT to verify the sampled material. Prepares, designs, and conducts special studies alone or with the supervisor, researches and develops new test methods to take the place of obsolete testing methods, and suggests and conducts tests to find the nature of problems encountered with concrete in the field or lab. This position also compiles data, calculates, and reports the results when the investigation is complete. Assists other Physical Tests Subsections with their workload when needed, including assisting with performing tests, preparing samples, maintaining, repairing and evaluating lab equipment, and cleaning laboratory and sample areas. Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: Valid Driver's License at time of appointment. Preferred Qualifications: Four years of experience in engineering, engineering technical support AND/OR education in engineering, engineering technology, mathematics, drafting, and/or surveying. General knowledge of concrete. General knowledge of Microsoft Office. Specific skills in performing concrete plastics testing. General knowledge of AASHTOWare Projects (AWP). Education: High school diploma or equivalent and a passing grade in a high school algebra course. You can self-certify by submitting a statement that you passed high school algebra. Post-Offer/Pre-employment Requirements: This position is subject to pre-employment physical testing. The selected candidate will be required to pass the screening as a condition of employment.
