Position Summary:
The T.W. Bonner Laboratory invites applications for electronics engineers to join and lead our efforts in the area of experimental nuclear and particle physics. The Rice group (Acosta, Ecklund, Geurts, Li, Padley) is playing key roles in the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), in designing and constructing electronic systems of several upgrade projects of the CMS experiment for the high-luminosity LHC, including the forward pixel tracker, endcap timing layer (ETL), and muon trigger system. The group is also involved in the ePIC experiment at the electron-ion collider (EIC), leading the effort of developing front-end electronics for the time-of-flight system.
Ideal Candidate Statement:
An ideal candidate will have excellent skills in one (or more) of the following areas: analog circuit design; schematic capture and PCB layout; FPGA logic design and programming, data acquisition, high-level programming (such as C++ and python), or other related areas. Experience in large nuclear and particle physics experiments is preferred. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with other physicists and engineers at Rice University and at other institutions and will participate and help represent Rice in all activities related to these projects including project reviews and system tests.
Workplace Requirements
This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in-person at Rice University. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.
Proposed Hiring Range:
$83,400 -$106,000
*Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.
This position is funded by a grant, soft and/or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of funding.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in physics, electrical engineering, or computer science at the time of appointment.
Three (3) or more years of experience in analog circuit design, schematic capture and PCB layout (e.g., Altium PCB design tools).
Knowledgeable in an electronics firmware language (preferably Verilog or VHDL).
General software development experience (C++ and python)
Preferences:
Experience with high-speed optical links.
Experience with aspects of digital electronics hardware design, board production, and testing, as future experimental physics projects are expected to arise in these areas.
