Established in 2021, Georgetown's Racial Justice Institute leverages the collective strength of Georgetown to advance knowledge on racial justice, form the next generation of leaders and advocates and seed breakthrough approaches to lasting change. The Racial Justice Institute is an interdisciplinary research hub led by a community of thought leaders, scholars, and advocates who innovate strategies and solutions to build a more just world for all people to prosper and thrive. Job Overview
The Director of the Racial Justice Enactors facilitates research, writing, and direction of educational programming and is responsible for overseeing, facilitating, and directing the Racial Justice Enactors. The Racial Justice Enactors is comprised of performing arts professionals and educational developers and is housed within Georgetown's Racial Justice Institute and supported by the Dean's Office, the Red House, and the CURA Initiative. The Racial Justice Enactors create arts-based educational and social interventions. This work spans university settings from audiences of instructors and administrators to students and community hubs, sparking conversation and spreading knowledge. The Racial Justice Enactors work as racial justice "first responders," developing 20-minute works that dramatize and dissect social, legal, and health disparities crafting scenarios to address the harmful racial inequities in these contexts. Pairing short, applied theater performances in a range of genres with facilitated discussions, our programs work to highlight the experience of marginalized individuals, shed light on current and historical racial inequities, and enhance participants' abilities to advance equity.
The Director's duties include but are not limited to:
Consult with campus constituencies about educational needs Develop scripts and educational materials to facilitate structured post-performance conversations Organize and facilitate campus conversations and follow-up activities Rehearse student and professional performers Assess program structure's impact in collaboration with Georgetown faculty and staff Collaborate with the Director of Creative Projects at the Woodshed for Art, Thought, and Culture to ensure the educational programming is consistently aligned with Georgetown University's mission and produces meaningful and impactful works that adapt to the needs of the Georgetown community. Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation
The Director of the Racial Justice Enactors casts and supervises the performers within the Racial Justice Enactors and works closely with the Director of Creative Projects at RJI's Woodshed for Art Thought, and Culture. As well, they work with students and faculty in the Georgetown Law School and the Georgetown Medical School and help to facilitate research to accurately depict and perform scenes within these fields.
The Director coordinates with the Woodshed Center for Art, Thought, and Culture; the Red House; and the CURA Initiative to create a "season" of performances and community arts events that will address harmful racial inequities and inspire action; and works with the Dean's office at Georgetown College to ensure that the RJ Enactors are adapting successfully to the campus climate and the needs of the Georgetown community. Requirements and Qualifications Bachelor's degree - preference for Master's degree or equivalent experience in the field 3 to 5 years of progressively responsible experience in theater, facilitation, producing, community building, and research settings Strong leadership skills Strong producing skills Experience in directing theatrical works, community building, facilitation, research, and performance production processes Exceptional communication skills, especially in community and relationship building Experience with complex racial justice issues Experience with playwriting and development Ability to work collaboratively Experience managing a team to achieve strategic goals and vision Current Georgetown Employees:
