AFT, AFL-CIO Director of Professional Issues Based in Columbus, OH General Description:
The Director of Professional Issues informs, trains, and mobilizes OFT member leaders on education policy and professional development. The Director is responsible for keeping members apprised of issues that affect their daily professional lives and representing their interests at the state level. This includes working with the Ohio Department of Education, State Board of Education, and other professional education organizations in the areas of policy, laws, and rules that affect OFT members. The Director also organizes and trains members to be involved in policy making, through testifying at state Board of Education meetings or sitting on a committee or workgroup. Additionally, the Director provides OFT locals with information and resources to support them in their work, including professional development and training when needed. The Director also supports other OFT staff in their work with individual locals and the larger state organization.
Responsibilities: Represent OFT at state department meetings and coalition meetings. Develop and maintain strong relationships with partner organizations, allies, and policymaking entities. Communicate with members about education issues in a timely manner, including writing a monthly digital newsletter. Serve as a resource to OFT locals and members on education issues. Elevate voices of members in education policy decisions. Plan, design, coordinate, and conduct education and training programs. Advise local leaders on implementation of education policy and it's impact on contract language. Coordinate conversations between locals on strategic implementation of policies. Work across departments on integrating professional issues into all aspects of OFT work. Assist with organizing campaigns. Perform other related work as assigned. Requirements: Bachelors' degree Experience working in education field Excellent written and verbal communication skills Valid driver's license Ability to work nights and weekends when required Ability to develop goals and work plans Ability to work cooperatively within a team framework Ability to work in Columbus office Bargaining Unit: OFTSU
