Full job description Director of Facilities and Operations Immediate Supervisor: Superintendent 52 weeks (full time) The Director of Facilities and Operations plays a pivotal role in ensuring the efficient and effective operation of all facilities within the school district. This leadership position is responsible for overseeing the planning, management, and maintenance of school buildings, grounds, and related infrastructure to create safe, functional, and conducive learning environments for students, staff, and visitors.
Qualifications: Minimum of 5 years of experience in facilities management, operations management, or a related field, preferably in a school district or educational setting. Bachelor's degree in facilities management, business administration, engineering, or a related field preferred but not required. Strong knowledge of facilities management principles, practices, and regulations, including building codes, safety standards, and environmental regulations. Demonstrated leadership abilities, with experience in supervising and motivating diverse teams of staff and contractors. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders. Proficiency in budget management, procurement processes, and project management. Performance Responsibilities: Develop and implement comprehensive facility management plans, policies, and procedures to ensure the proper functioning, safety, and cleanliness of all school facilities. Coordinate maintenance, repairs, and renovations of buildings, grounds, and equipment, prioritizing tasks based on urgency, budget constraints, and regulatory requirements. Conduct regular inspections of facilities to identify maintenance needs, safety hazards, and compliance issues, and take proactive measures to address them. Oversee the day-to-day operations of the custodial and maintenance departments. Manage budgets, procurement processes, and contracts related to facilities maintenance, operations, and services, ensuring cost-effectiveness and compliance with financial regulations. Maintains a coordinated inventory control program for all areas of the department. Collaborate with district administrators, principals, and staff to address operational challenges, streamline processes, and optimize resources to support educational goals. Stay abreast of federal, state, and local regulations, codes, and standards related to school facilities, environmental health, safety, and accessibility, and ensure compliance with all applicable requirements. Assist in the develop and implement protocols for emergency preparedness, crisis response, and security protocols to safeguard the well-being of students, staff, and visitors. Provide strategic leadership and direction to facilities and operations staff, including maintenance technicians, custodians, transportation personnel, and security personnel, fostering a culture of accountability, professionalism, and teamwork. Conducts a continuing program of staff training and personnel development. Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback and professional development opportunities to staff, and promote a positive work environment conducive to employee growth and satisfaction. Works as part of negotiating team during contract talks. Administers the labor contract in a consistent and fair manner. Assigns and schedules maintenance personnel. Prepares reports as requested on costs of work done, materials used, and labor expended. Establishes a regular preventative maintenance program. Collaborate with district leadership, school board members, community stakeholders, and external partners to communicate facility-related initiatives, solicit feedback, and build support for long-term facilities planning and improvement projects. Serve as a liaison between the school district and external agencies, contractors, vendors, and regulatory bodies on matters related to facilities management and operations.
