General Statement of Responsibilities: Boynton Health is seeking a strong, accomplished clinical medical leader to serve as the Director of Clinical Services at Boynton Health.  The Director of Clinical Services will be a champion and leader towards student centered, culturally responsive health care through a team based approach.  A nationally recognized leader in college health, Boynton Healthâ™s mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of University of Minnesota students and the campus community. Its vision is to be the healthiest campus in the nation.  Boynton Health serves an estimated 29,000 students and staff annually through 100,000 visits. This position will provide strategic direction and oversight for clinical services while modeling leadership as a compassionate physician, thought partner to health and wellness activities at Boynton and across the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus.  The Director of Clinical Services will promote a respectful, healthy work environment that builds upon the clinicâ™s strengths and further diversity to meet all of our studentsâ™ healthcare needs.  The Director of Clinical Services will provide clinical leadership to assure health outcomes, while demonstrating innovation and efficiency.  This position collaborates with OSA Leadership and Boynton Health leadership to meet the University of Minnesota Twin Citiesâ™ studentsâ™ healthcare needs.
The Medical Director/Director of Clinical Services is responsible for directing medical services and clinical services to assure high quality care and stewardship of resources.  This includes ensuring staff adherence to relevant regulations of the University of Minnesota and governmental agencies and the highest professional and ethical standards of the provider staff. The Medical Director/Director of Clinical Services collaborates with the Executive Director in formulating long range planning and policies and is responsible for ensuring that Boynton Health meets its organizational goals and vision. The University of Minnesota studentsâ™ demographics are changing and Boynton is looking for clinical leadership to develop future health services that meet the needs of all students, particularly those who experience challenges to staying healthy while pursuing their education.  Supervised by:  Assistant Vice Provost, Executive Director of Health Services 
Number of people reporting to this position directly:  Co-Directors of Primary Care, Dental Director, Physical Therapy & Nutrition Director, Pharmacy Director, Optometry Director, and the Infection Prevention Specialist

Compensation $187,000 - $225,000 dependent upon qualifications.  Detailed Job Responsibilities:  Clinical Authority and Leadership 30%: The Director of Clinical Services will lead and champion Boynton Healthâ™s strategic plan, values, and focus on developing a model of whole person care for a diverse student population.  This position will lead efforts to move towards an integrated approach to services, while applying principles of population health to the campus community. The Director will work to center student voices and campus community health by responding and aligning clinical services to meet constituentsâ™ needs.

Duties include supervision of provider staff, and oversight of clinical quality, infection control, and regulatory clinical compliance activities of Boynton Health.  In addition to the broad range of supervisory responsibilities, this position serves as liaison and resource to other areas of the University of Minnesota including but not limited to the Campus Public Health Officer, Office of Academic Clinical Affairs, and other Office for Student Affairs departments as it pertains to student health. Oversight and leadership of clinical services at Boynton include: Provide direct supervision of clinical service line directors, with the exception of mental health.  Plan, direct, monitor and evaluate clinical services at Boynton including primary care, gynecology, gender care, optometry, dental, physical therapy, nutrition and infection prevention. Provide clinical consultation and indirect supervision as needed to public health, nursing, x-ray, lab, therapy and psychiatry. Provide input and approve hiring decisions for clinical practitioners within the health service. Collaborate with the Director of Mental Health Services at Boynton in working to integrate care, as needed. Serve on internal quality committees to establish standards for performance, reviewing patient satisfaction surveys, critical incident review, and other performance measures to achieve the highest levels of provider performance and quality of care. Serve as a guide to medical staff in maintaining organization accreditation, assure compliance with regulatory requirements and ensure the provider staff has adequate training, ability, tools, and resources to perform their job to achieve the highest level of performance. Determine necessary qualifications, key competences, and set performance expectations for medical staff.  Hire, appoint, reappoint, credential, re-credential, and assign medical/surgical privileges for clinical providers. Ensure that clinical provider staff has adequate training to achieve the highest level of performance and professionalism. Monitor for health developments and disseminate crucial information such as Department of Health alerts to providers.   Problem-solve and serve as a clinical expert to public health in regards to infectious disease, urgent medical situation protocols and assist with student emergencies requiring clinical expertise. Participate and lead efforts to maintain AAAHC accreditation.  Assure that service line directors and direct reports meet visit targets as appropriate. Establish, modify, and approve clinical services, policies and procedures as needed and appropriate. Serve as the delegated authority to approve all clinical policies and protocols. Serve in Boyntonâ™s Incident Command Structure in the case of emergency. Serve on the Executive Leadership Team in oversight of Boyntonâ™s Clinical Services and campus wide role in student health services and infectious disease emergencies 15% Develop and implement services and interventions to improve campus health especially for underserved students who may not be accessing care, by developing partnerships with key campus community leaders and student groups. Determine and lead clinical services and develop culturally responsive models of care and interventions specific for the University of Minnesota student population, using qualitative and quantitative data to drive this approach.  Participate and apply medical knowledge and training to discussions regarding the general health service and campus wide services, programs and policies that impact the health of the campus population.  Participate in campus wide and clinic focused efforts on emergency preparedness, planning and continuity of operations in events of infectious disease, natural and manmade emergencies or disasters.   Lead and coordinate continuity of care and referral relationships with local hospitals serving students.  Set visit, revenue and expense targets for the operating budget for clinical service lines with the Director of Operations and the Finance Director.  This position serves as a liaison for various medical and public health issues with other departments across campus to serve as an expert on clinical health issues and services.  Serves as a spokesperson or in a consultative role as needed. Respond to parent and leadership concerns as needed or appropriate. Meet and respond to student voices as needed.  Attend and participate in the Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) meetings and discussions as requested.  This is an advisory group for Boynton on campus wide health issues and concerns. Attend annual meetings and represent Boynton with other Big 10 Medical Directors as well as other regional and national organizations relevant to college health (NCCHA and ACHA.) Supervision 15% Provides ongoing supervision to leaders and managers and provides regular performance feedback. Conducts performance reviews for staff per U of MN HR guidelines. Coaches and mentors staff, focusing on building internal talent through professional development. Engages supervisees in developing and implementing the annual work plan, tracking performance, and disseminating learnings throughout the department. Assures that supervisees complete contingency planning, monitoring and auditing to mitigate any risk areas.   Collaborate closely with Talent Management and Human Resources to build and develop clinical leadership to assure continuity of care and nurture clinical professional development. Be fair and treat employees equitably and in accordance with UMN personnel policies, labor agreements, and laws. Be responsive to individual needs of staff and facilitate individual growth. Direct Patient Care in Urgent and Primary Care  40% FTE The scope of practice for the Physician may include, but is not limited to the following for which privileges are granted annually, according to state law
Taking patient histories. Performing physical examinations including well visits/examinations. Interpreting and evaluating patient data. Ordering or performing diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures which may include, but are not limited to biopsy, minor surgery and wound care. Prescribing, administering, and dispensing prescription and nonprescription medications and medical devices. Diagnosing and treating illnesses, infectious diseases, minor trauma, and chronic conditions or diseases. Making patient referrals to other providers within Boynton and outside of Boynton to facilitate treatment plans, including severe mental illness. Providing contraceptive services, including emergency contraception Educating patients on health promotion, disease prevention, current treatments, importance of patient compliance, and answering patient questions. Arranging follow-up to review test results with patients, via appointments, phone calls, letters, or secure messages. Consulting with other physicians and/or health care professionals as needed to confirm difficult diagnosis and facilitate appropriate treatment plans. Assisting in mentoring and supervising the clinical work of nursing staff, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. Other responsibilities as needed. Problem-solving: Identifies and clearly defines problems, evaluates, and weighs alternatives, works effectively to remove barriers and implements solutions. Measures the impact of the implemented process to ensure target states are met. Political Savvy/Conflict Resolution: Develops effective give and take relationships with others; understands the agenda and perspective of others; recognizes and effectively balances the interests and needs of one's own group with those of other groups. Resolves conflicts effectively and supports decisions. Diversity: Effectively leads and leverages the capabilities, insights, and ideas of all individuals; works effectively with individuals of diverse style, ability, and motivation.  Ability to center the student in clinical services offered. Required Qualifications: M.D. / D.O. degree.  Licensure by the state of Minnesota to practice medicine.   ABMS board certification.  Board certified in their specialty. DEA certification.   Five years of senior management/leadership and supervisory experience in a group practice/outpatient primary care setting, community health clinic setting, and/or student health care. Demonstrated experience in building high performing clinical teams; comfortable with accountability and engaging teams. The candidate must exhibit creativity and have the ability to handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines and prioritize workload with a high attention to detail. Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, ability to work in a collaborative team work environment, and a strong customer service orientation. Experience leading change initiatives and in using quality improvement practices, data and outcomes to improve operations and clinical care.  Commitment to promoting a campus culture that respects and advances diversity and inclusion. Experience working with individuals from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds, lived experience and identities. Proven commitment to serving all patients and an understanding of how health and culture intersects, along with how health disparities affect communities served by Boynton.  Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in a highly matrixed organization. Exceptional organizational skills. Ability to present clinical information to people from various walks of life.
