The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (JHUSOM) is seeking a Director of Admissions, SOM who will be responsible for managing the staff and application process to meet or exceed new student enrollment targets. They will directly oversee operations and programs related to the Office of Admissions. The Director will be instrumental in helping execute new strategies to strengthen student-centric relationships while engaging with prospective students and sharing their enthusiasm for Johns Hopkins.

The mission of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Enrollment Management organization is to recruit and enroll an outstanding community of diverse students who are committed to excellence and leadership in patient care, education, and research.
Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Enrollment Management, the director will influence and implement the SOM's data-driven admissions and recruitment programs and processes, with the intention of recruiting, evaluating, selecting, and matriculating highly talented and diverse students from around the world. This leader will bring strategic and progressive leadership as well as effective oversight and management to the Office of Admissions in the SOM and will collaborate extensively with other Enrollment Management colleagues. The Director is expected to foster and facilitate a data-informed admissions environment committed to regular and recurring refinements of admissions processes while supervising the MD Admissions staff.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities General Operations of the SOM's MD admissions processes In consultation with other Enrollment Management leadership, establish Admissions' goals and objectives and determine appropriate policies, methods, and criteria to achieve them. Develop and implement an annual recruitment plan for assigned programs and populations of students. Ensure alignment with Financial Aid strategies and approaches.
Assist with the file evaluation and interviews of applicants for admission. Participate during admissions committee meetings to discuss applicant candidacy.
Develop and promote the School's student diversity and inclusion goals throughout the entire enrollment process that reflects - to the extent possible - the composition of the patients they will likely serve and/or who may benefit from their scientific contributions.
Utilize appropriate technologies to execute all aspects of the process including targeted communication with applicants, planning and hosting of interviews and other events, communication of decision letters, and other targeted e-mail and text messages.
Provide the dean's office, and other administrators with detailed admissions data and reports
Working with the Office of Institutional Technology (OIT), manages the admissions office's annual cycle prep, data management planning, and execution of key activities in the process utilizing various admissions and CRM platforms. Interacts with appropriate staff regarding technical issues. Provides thought leadership, stays abreast of current research, and recommends best practices within medical education student recruitment and enrollment strategies.
Ensure that admissions activities are compliant with federal and state regulations, accreditation standards, and national best practices.
Recruitment Functions Present and promote the JHUSOM MD program to attract domestic and international prospective students at virtual, on-campus, and off-campus events, including but not limited to, open house programs, information sessions, MD graduate & professional fairs, and one-on-one meetings/interviews.
Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Office of Admissions as well as faculty, staff, and administration in addressing diversity and inclusion outreach and recruitment challenges and opportunities.
Ensure JHUSOM is building and nurturing relationships with diverse and inclusive educational partners, including Historically Black Colleges & Universities, Hispanic-Serving institutions, and other universities (e.g. pre-health advisors), national/local organizations, and professional associations to build a diverse pipeline of prospective students.
Communicate with prospective students via a variety of modes and modalities, maintaining connections and responding to questions and inquiries. Oversee the release of the Admissions Committee's decisions, ensuring they are relayed to applicants accurately and in a timely manner in close coordination with financial aid.
Manage the development and implementation of all yield events.
Plan, coordinate, and lead event programming efforts for the admitted student Second Look Weekends (SLW).
Responsible for managing the SLW committee comprised of current students and JHM staff. Ensures committee stays within set SLW budget
Marketing Communications Planning Develop and maintain marketing strategies for students throughout the entire enrollment cycle via Slate CRM.
Collaborate with central Marketing & Communications (M&C) for promotion of various recruitment events.
Assist in the development, production, and enhancement of all SOM marketing materials with Marketing and Communications, including the admissions marketing brochures, flyers, and application materials, and the preparation of digital assets
Manage the MD admissions webpage(s) and partners with Marketing & Communication on webpage edits/revisions.
Provide guidance and oversight for social media related to the School of Medicine and the MD Program.
Initiate new marketing opportunities as appropriate with M&C colleagues.
Data Collection, Reporting, and Analysis Lead efforts to compile historical data, international/regional/national trends, and AAMC enrollment data to determine effective recruitment strategies.
Foster and facilitate a strong working relationship with the Sr. Data Analyst to create robust data analysis of admissions and enrollment data for continuous data-informed processes within Admissions.
Oversee Slate reports and queries of the MD Admissions Office to provide timely updates to leaders at SOM. Work with the Sr. Data Analyst to utilize both AAMC and campus admission/enrollment reporting tools to collect and analyze admissions statistics throughout the admissions cycle.
Build and maintain detailed and accurate reports with the Sr. Data Analyst and/or queries to foster and facilitate efficient operations while communicating timely updates to all relevant parties.
Facilitate the preparation of applicant data for presentation at admissions committee meetings and to internal/external stakeholders.
Provide data and reports in partnership with the Sr. Data Analyst in support of evaluating recruitment, evaluation, and yield strategies.
Assist in the development and assessment of criteria for the appropriate evaluation of candidates for admission.
Support the Sr. Data Analyst and the Precision Education department with all pertinent and relevant data needed to enhance ongoing analysis efforts associated with the continuous enhancement of a fair and objective holistic admissions process.
Team Operations and Personnel Management Recruit, manage, and train professional staff and student volunteers and any paid student assistants regarding recruitment initiatives and programs.
Organize regular general professional development activities for the Admissions Office
Bring continuous improvement efforts for process and practice to the team. Special knowledge, skills, and abilities Demonstrated ability to set goals and develop strategic initiatives and priorities for a team. Active and current knowledge of applicant life-cycle data strategies and marketing recruitment best practices for admissions recruitment, especially in medical education. Demonstrates commitment to and advocates for diversity, inclusion, and representation within a holistic admissions environment. Proven ability to develop and implement strategies for the recruitment of a diverse student population in a higher education environment. Ability to work well under pressure, meet competing time frames, and prioritize work. Superior interpersonal, relationship-building, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Must be able to recruit in a highly competitive market. Ability to work independently, and exercise independent and professional judgment. Strong organizational change management experience. Must understand how data is used to manage the prospective student funnel from inquiry through matriculated students. Extensive knowledge of marketing principles, best practices, and techniques relevant to student recruitment and admissions. Excellent communication and presentation skills, both oral and written with diverse and international populations. Skilled in the use of tools in the online space utilizing social media and digital content management. Skills and experience to independently and accurately counsel prospective students to provide smooth transitions from inquiry to enrollment. Experience with AMCAS WebAdMIT application platform, student information systems (SIS/Ellucian) and client relationship management (CRM), and admissions software systems (Slate), SAP, and Concur. Strong proficiency with multiple software and workplace collaboration products, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, and PowerPoint), and zoom. Ability to be flexible throughout the year to perform other duties as assigned for the successful functioning of the Admissions Office. This role is eligible for occasional hybrid location work.
Supervisory Responsibility A staff of several direct reports including an Associate Director and admissions officers and academic service specialists as well as paid seasonal file reviewers and interviewers. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree.
Five years of progressively responsible related experience.
Previous experience managing admissions staff.
Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college coursework may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. Preferred Qualifications Five or more years of experience in higher education administration (admissions or enrollment management services) in an academic medical environment
