Deputy Division Leader

Deputy Division Leader (R&D Manager 5) Location Los Alamos, NM : What You Will Do Dynamic Experiments (M) Division is responsible for current and evolving explosive science and shock physics efforts as well as High Explosive (HE) fabrication, disposition, and execution of hydrodynamic experiments. We support National Security through the characterization and application of energetic materials and understanding material response at extreme conditions to address conventional, nuclear, and homeland defense needs. The Division has a diverse portfolio of research, development, and application projects involving the dynamic properties of inert and reactive weapons materials. Competencies include the physics of shock waves in inert and energetic materials (EM), pressing, machining and inspection of EM into research and development (R&D) weapon system test components as well as R&D of EM, the shock initiation and detonation physics of explosives, the response of explosives to stimuli including electrical, chemical, mechanical, thermal, impact, shock and laser interactions, and the diverse application of high-explosive driven pulsed-power (HEPP) systems. As a member of the M Division Management team, the Deputy Division Leader (R&D Manager 5) will have responsibilities supporting the technical and operational leadership and development of the Division. These duties include working with the Division Leader, and Division Management team to ensure the operational excellence and continuous improvement of the Division, planning and executing specific projects for the Division, and assisting and representing the Division Leader. Specific roles and responsibilities in collaboration with the Division Leader: Provide effective leadership to enable the M workforce to succeed in Division milestones and deliverables. Participate in the development of the programmatic directions for the Division and the completion of assigned deliverables; Effectively partner with the HE Safety program at LANL to represent the programmatic needs in alignment with DOE requirements and HE worker safety; Oversee operational performance including explosives safety, conduct of operations, and environmental management; Plan, organize, and manage activities of the Division; Determine and promote long-range goals to ensure that the Division performs the highest quality research relevant to national needs; Develop and foster effective teams to meet customer goals; Identify and act on opportunities to influence directions, policy, and vision, both internal and external to the organization. What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Leadership Record of success in personnel leadership as demonstrated by the recruitment, retention and mentoring of an outstanding and diverse research, technical, and administrative staff including conflict resolution and supporting diversity in the workplace and AA/EEO. Experience in management and administration of high output scientific facilities requiring stringent environmental, safety, formality of operations, and health standards. Technical Demonstrated success in the management of a substantial scientific/technical organization as evidenced by strategic planning, the resolution of programmatic conflicts, providing scientific advocacy, the effective management of personnel and resources, and the achievement of goals of significant impact, complexity, or size. Engineering/Scientific Research Demonstrated engineering/scientific accomplishment in an area of engineering/scientific research relevant to the Division, as evidenced by an outstanding publication record and/or demonstrable national or international reputation. Communication Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers, strong teaming skills. Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 12 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, a Ph.D. in Physics, Shock Physics, Materials Science, Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or areas related to energetic materials may be preferred. Desired Qualifications: Safety & Security Experience applying Human Performance Improvement Principles. Familiarity with DOE and LANL policies and procedures related to High Explosives safety, Hazard Analysis and conduct of operations. Strategy & Collaboration Experience building collaborative relationships across LANL, and/or with other national laboratories, universities, and the private sector. Broad familiarity with the state of science within the Division, including how these activities are relevant across the Laboratory and to the DOE, other government agencies, academia, and the private sector. Nuclear Weapon Program Initiatives Working knowledge of Nuclear Weapons Program strategy, initiatives, future directions, and needed capabilities. Demonstrated success with program development as evidenced by successfully identifying strategic opportunities and developing agreements to fund new initiatives. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad. Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
