SLCC's award-winning Orientation & Student Success department supports this mission by preparing new and returning students to thrive in higher education. The OSS Coordinator will be part of this team and work collaboratively to implement elements of a comprehensive student success plan, which includes new student orientations, a summer bridge intervention, the Bruin Scholars program, peer mentoring, parent and family programming, and college success workshops.In addition to supporting our new student orientation efforts, the OSS coordinator will be responsible for growing and expanding our Bruin Scholar (retention) program, developing student success curriculum for online and in person delivery, and working with other staff to expand financial literacy efforts. As a member of the OSS team, the coordinator will benefit from being part of a caring team environment made up of more than 20 people, which includes professional staff and student leaders.Essential Responsibilities and Duties: - New Student Orientation
Orient individual and groups of students in understanding the requirements for all SLCC areas of study and educational pathways by organizing and leading college-wide events.Supervise, train, and support the professional development of part-time OSS student leaders.Work with faculty, staff, and peer leaders to advance the retention, success, and completion goals of OSS and Salt Lake Community College.Present information about SLCC's student life and academic culture to groups of students.Explain degree prerequisites, course sequencing, course modalities, registration holds, and other enrollment information to new students.Present information to new students during orientation and transition events.
- Bruin Scholars and Peer Mentoring Programming
Coordinate Taylorsville and West Valley campus efforts in recruiting and supporting Bruin Scholars, a program designed to support first-generation, undocumented, transitioning-out-of-foster care, nontraditional students, and students who just need help figuring out collegeMeet with Bruin Scholar students throughout the academic year.Track Bruin Scholars retention, GPA, graduation rates, and satisfaction ratesDevelop and implement programing in partnership with other staff and faculty for consistent monthly meaningful and educational contact with Bruin Scholars.Assist in hiring, training, and supervising peer mentors.Establish and maintain relationships with various departments in the Student Success, Enrollment Management, Institutional Marketing, Student Success and Leadership Studies, and Student Services units.
- Financial Literacy
Educate Bruin Scholars and students at-large about personal finance.Disseminate resources focused on financial success.Organize events, speakers, or workshops focused on financial literacy topics.
- Student Success Initiatives
Review student success curriculum, facilitate lessons, and assess their impact on new students.Maintain and update Student Success website.Collaborate with other SLCC departments across campus to create or advertise student success workshop (i.e., SkillShops).Work with Academic Advising to assist students on Academic Warning.Create and assess a weekly newsletter for first and second semester students.
-Other duties as assigned. Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued: Minimum Qualifications: Associates degree
Experience may be traded for education on a 2:1 ratio (2 additional years of education equals 1 year of relevant experience). Related part-time experience will be pro-rated.
Zero-to-two years of direct professional experience. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree, preferably in education, educational psychology, sociology, communications, ethnic studies, or related field.Experience may be traded for education on a 2:1 ratio (2 additional years of related experience equals 1 year of education).Two plus years of direct work experience.Experience working in a higher education environment, particularly two-year schools.Experience teaching in a higher education institution.Spanish speaking. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Be able to work with a highly diverse student body and staff.Perform at an advanced level of cultural competency, critical thinking, and exemplary inclusive practices.Motivate, encourage, mentor, and teach new students how to navigate higher education.Create a welcoming environment for new students and their families.Demonstrate a personal commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice.Demonstrate initiative, creativity, teamwork, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.Articulate the purpose of general education classes and teach students how to register for these courses.Feel comfortable using technology.Be familiar with student development and student retention theories.Be dependable, have excellent organizational skills, and pay close attention to details.Participate in ongoing professional development sessions.Communicate effectively (in writing and verbally) with a wide range of diverse individuals.Deliver high quality presentations and lead discussions with large and small groups of students in new student orientations, or in classrooms with high enrollments of first-year students.Provide excellent customer service and when necessary provide one-on-one consultations.Work collaboratively with others in the OSS team, as well as our campus partners.Assess the needs of students and create interventions or services to meet these needs.Organize, process and disseminate large amounts of information accurately.Learn the requirements of SLCC services, major prerequisites, programs and degree options, as well as college resources and processes (e.g., admissions, registration, financial aid, placement, and orientation).Work well under pressure and function independently with integrity under minimal supervision.Utilize basic computer operating systems (e.g., Microsoft Office Word, Publisher, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and SLCC's student information system (i.e., Banner, MySuccess).Prioritize assignments, plan and carry projects to completion.Learn quickly, work well under pressure, and work ethically with confidential information.Advocate for all students with an emphasis on new, first-generation, undocumented, former foster-care, non-traditional and all other underrepresented students.Work a flexible schedule which may include telecommuting, mornings, evenings, and weekends.Communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, age and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College. The OSS coordinator must be able to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
