Construction Inspector

JOB SUMMARY STATEMENT: Performs construction, contract administration, drafting, and other related duties for the Engineering Division. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Assists in general office operations.
2. Makes contact with the public.
3. Acts as an inspector on any assigned project including new subdivision work and commercial developments.
4. Maintains daily log of all activities and project progress for each project being monitored.
5. Performs tests and arranges for any testing required for a project.
6. Confers with contractors, utility companies, and developers on specific projects and makes recommendations.
7. Performs contract administration duties for the Engineering Division.
8. Performs any necessary surveying work in conjunction with city construction projects and location of rights-of-way and easements.
The above duties and responsibilities include those tasks, physical and mental requirements, visual requirements, unique physical surroundings, and mental/cognitive abilities required to perform the essential elements of the position.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Education and Special License(s)/Certifications - High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's degree in Construction Technology preferred. Requires Class B CDL license with air brake endorsement.
2. Experience - Three to five years of experience in a related field.
3. Skills - Skill in operating listed tools and equipment. Knowledge of engineering design and construction principles. Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering, particularly as applied to municipal public works. Knowledge of construction and maintenance methods, materials, and equipment as employed by the Public Works Department. Knowledge of the laws and regulations related to the development and construction of public improvement projects.
4. Mental Requirements - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, other agency directors, contractors, and the general public. Ability to demonstrate good aptitude for routine mathematical calculations.
5. Physical Requirements - Must be able to sit for prolonged periods; must be able to listen to normal conversation; must be able to walk occasionally, and use hands and fingers to operate, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; must be able to reach with hands and arms; must be able to have vision sufficient to see close up and have the ability to adjust focus; and, must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and transport it 15 feet.
