Description Position Title: Collaborative and Holistic Academic Mentoring Peer Success (CHAMPS) Mentor Reports to : Vice President for Inclusive Excellence Hourly Rate : $16/hour up to 10 hours a week Session: Fall 2024 - Spring 2025 Academic Year Job Purpose: Reporting to the CHAMPS Project Manager, the CHAMPS Mentor will be responsible for assigned students (mentees) from underrepresented communities. The mentor will serve First-Generation, Pell-Eligible, and BIPOC students during their first year at the University of Lynchburg. The mentor will focus on the growth and development of mentees through the topics of academic support, social acclimation, and personal support. The mentor must be able to work responsibly and independently. The mentor must have strong organizational skills to support multiple initiatives and individuals and demonstrate commitment to promoting and supporting an environment of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Develop meeting schedule for assigned mentees, to include individual and small group meetings during the fall and spring semestersCommunicate effectively with mentees regarding upcoming meetings and social activitiesRegularly document outcomes of individual and group meetingsFollow up with mentees to provide support as neededConvey vital information in a timely manner to the CHAMPS Project ManagerEstablish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other CHAMPS mentorsAssist the CHAMPS Project Manager as needed with eventsAttend CHAMPS programs and workshops ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES INCLUDE: Ability and desire to work with diverse populationsAbility to work independently and as part of a team.Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet responsibilities. Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion, tact and confidentiality.Strong planning and organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities. EQUIPMENT USED: Computers and PrintersTelephone/Voice MailCopier Qualifications ORAL OR WRITTEN REQUIREMENTS: Proficient English-language oral skills for effective communication (e.g., public speaking and presentation) in individual and large group presentations. Proficient English-language reading comprehension and writing abilities. EXPERIENCE: Prior experience in higher education is highly desired.Above-average interpersonal skills. EDUCATION: High school education is required. MANUALS AND REFERENCES: Hornet - Student HandbookOEI Staff Handbook of Personnel Policies and Procedures WORKING CONDITIONS: The functions of this position are usually performed sitting, but may involve some amount of time walking. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, lifting, or carrying may be required. Tasks such as working at a computer keyboard involve extensive wrist and hand movements. Contact with employees, students, and the general public. Normal office hours are Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Required hours will normally be scheduled during these hours, but additional hours beyond the normal workday, and nights and weekends sometimes required. Travel might be required for scheduled off-campus student events.
