Job SummaryUnder the general supervision of the Director of Facilities Management and the immediate supervision of the Supervising Building Service Engineer, maintains, services, repairs, and inspects heating, ventilating, mechanical, and air conditioning systems, and the mechanical, plumbing, electrical and electronic systems associated with the decentralized utilities centers located throughout the campus and the Central Plant facility.Key ResponsibilitiesHVAC and mechanical systems - Responsible for operating, maintaining, repairing and inspecting heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, water treatment and ventilating equipment (i.e. boilers, chillers, condensers, compressors, circulating water pumps, blower vans, valves, ducting, gauge).Emergency repairs to steam, natural gas, water, refrigerant, air and oil distribution systems - Reads, interprets and works from blueprints, manuals, diagrams and operating procedures. Analyzes situations accurately and takes prompt action during emergencies.Conduct a variety of electrical services and maintenance - Repairs and replaces bearing, shafts, seals, rings, and electrical wiring and installs mechanical system parts, gauges, valves, and pipes which require the application of skills and knowledge equivalent to the journey level in one or more of the basic trades worked.Knowledge Skills and AbilitiesWorking knowledge of HVAC systems for central and decentralized building plants and of building temperature control systems including electric, electronic and pneumatic controls. Up-to-date facilities maintenance procedures, including all types of plumping systems, electric motor control systems including electric motor control operations and water treatment systems. Excellent communication skills required to interface with the campus community to complete written work and to interact positively with co-workers and supervisor. Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills.Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."Education and ExperienceEquivalent to a high school diploma and two years of journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of boiler, heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment and systems required.Four years of experience is preferred.Experience working in a university or institutional setting.Physical SummaryHeavy work - Job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing.Licenses / CertificatesA valid California driver's license is required.Trade related higher education desirable; CFC certification preferred.DepartmentFM Engineering ServicesClassificationBuilding Service EngineerCompensationSalary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.CSU Classification Salary Range:$6,459 - $8,339 per month.BenefitsExcellent benefits through CalPERS (health, vision, dental), tuition fee waiver, generous vacation and sick leave, and 14 paid holidays each year.Time Base1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.Duration of AppointmentThis is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted.
