JOB SUMMARY: Work with Lead Communication Lineman and Groundman in constructing both aerial and underground fiber-optic network infrastructure as well as handling transfers and maintenance repair of such network. Operate bucket-truck, digger-derrick, backhoe and other equipment. Keep the truck stocked with the appropriate tools and materials.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Perform all the necessary activities in the construction and maintenance of aerial (overhead) and underground fiber optic networks. Activities include but are not limited to the following: Perform Make-ready adjustments, guying and associated aerial anchor requirements. Operate lasher for initial strand/fiber construction and over-lashing in communication zone (non-electric space). Frame poles for aerial fiber attachments. Build and maintain strand/lash cable and transfer attachments between poles. Install and remove pole anchors. Able to climb poles and work from hooks/gaffs at heights up to and exceeding 30'. Able to operate and use the following equipment: ladders, bucket truck, cable puller, reel stands, lasher, trencher, backhoe, digger-derrick, and plow in a safe manner and according to manufacturer specifications and practice. Able to use all hand tools, implements, devices, equipment and material coincident with work to be completed. Install, maintain, and repair underground vaults, pedestals, and conduit. Install and repair aerial & underground drops. Assist in the restoration of fiber-optic outages. Plan and Lay conduit for underground construction. Perform routine network inspections to identify defects in need of repair. Provide aerial and underground mainline and distribution fiber repair work. Gather and assemble appropriate material for each job. Coordinate with Fiber Network Engineer and Fiber optic Infrastructure Technicians for access to backbone fiber splices. Coordinate schedules with Tree Trimming contractors or staff within adequate time to allow for fiber construction and maintenance repair needs. Work in conjunction with electric crews to transfer fiber cable for line rebuild/relocation. Assist lineman and work on other crews, as required. Coordinate with garage staff and contracted services to ensure that equipment is maintained properly. Understand and utilize safety and protective equipment. Must be able to render first aid, CPR and pole-top rescue. Conducts safety inspections on vehicles, tools and safety equipment as needed. Complies with all traffic laws, safety rules and regulations while operating assigned vehicle. Should always look out for the safety of the vehicle, its occupants and its load. Ability to perform Utility Flagging and Road safety tasks. Ability to maintain reliable, predictable and reasonable attendance. Ability to communicate effectively with contracted linemen, electric staff, and other pole attachment companies. Responsible for all crew paperwork and documentation; turn in all correct documentation associated with job upon completion of the task. Must understand and take directions from Lead Linemen and Sr. OSP Engineer on a daily basis and participate in the construction activities of an aerial fiber construction crew. Work on call shifts after normal business hours. Lineman is responsible to actively participate in job site and crew safety and must exhibit and uphold BrightRidge safety requirements. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Must be able to perform the activities necessary to complete work assignments described in the duties and responsibilities section. Must be able to drive and operate all assigned vehicles, equipment, and trailers. Must be able to organize work, set priorities and complete assignments in a thorough manner with attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy. Must be able to maintain records required for accounting of time and materials. Must observe all safety procedures and report unsafe conditions. Should be familiar with the considerable hazards that exist, including falls, electric shock and electric flash, automobile traffic, and falling objects. Should have working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code and the requirements of working within the communications non-energized zone. Perform other duties as requested or assigned. Must maintain a valid drivers' license from state of residence. Must be available for after-hours work which would include working a fair share of all necessary overtime. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Must have general knowledge of company policies in order to answer consumer questions. Must be able to use required tools and materials in a safe and efficient manner. Must know safety rules and regulations. Must be familiar with pole framing techniques. Must have strong communication skills. Must know and have the ability to perform CPR. Must operate digger derrick truck and other equipment safely and according to manufacturer specifications and guidelines. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Position requires strenuous physical activity. Job requires frequent bending, standing, sitting, handling, pick/pinch, fine manipulation, vision, depth perception and arm/hand and simple grasp for machine control operation. Must be able to lift up to 116 lbs. Must have good ambulation for varying terrains. Must have good grip and strength and manual dexterity. Must be able to produce varying amounts of push/pull force.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed outside in varying weather conditions for the majority of the time. Subject to being called out during outages or other emergencies.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR HIRE: High school diploma or equivalent required. Prefer 2-year associates or equivalent working experience in technology field. Must have two years or more of prior experience as a Groundman or Lineman. Job Posted by ApplicantPro
