This role is part of the Lunar Transportation business unit, which develops Blue Origin's multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.
As the Blue Moon MK2 Crew Lander Lead Systems Engineer (LSE), you will report to the MK2 Sr. Director of Vehicle Development and support program execution for the MK2 Crew Lander. The LSE is responsible for leading the technical tasking across the vehicle systems engineering and integrated product teams to define and manage the technical architecture for the vehicle through the entire program lifecycle. This role additionally supports all aspects of technical leadership and team management to include accountability for and oversight of schedule, technical design, risk management and personnel management. You will also be expected to apply expertise to further improve on the implementation of systems engineering processes and teaming. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and attention towards safe and reliable spaceflight .
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Responsible and accountable for tasking the technical team in the development of the vehicle system and associated products that meet mission objectives and satisfy requirements while balancing schedule, and risk.
Apply heuristic and functional decomposition techniques to scope the design and development of the vehicle based on program objectives.
Define and track system budgets and technical performance metrics throughout the program lifecycle.
Monitor technical progress, requirements, system engineering budgets & schedules, deliverables, and risks, as well as review recommendations for change with program management.
Able to review the technical work of other system and product teams, detect subtle flaws, and provide substantive design improvement recommendations.
Able to quickly understand and report on a variety of technical tasks across the team relating but not limited to, configuration changes, technical risks, root cause failure assessments, waivers, and other variances against plan.
Own and execute the design reviews for the vehicle system to ensure design maturity at the appropriate level.
Act as the negotiator between multiple and sometimes conflicting interests to ensure the optimization of the vehicle.
Develop robust plans meeting deliverables and manage to the key operating metrics - including technical, schedule, and risk - reporting regularly to management and the team on progress.
Perform technical work and provide technical leadership of the highest caliber.
Utilize good engineering and business judgement to ensure the most efficient and effective product is designed, manufactured, procured, tested, qualified, and delivered.
Define and coordinate process development and continuous systems engineering improvement across the vehicle and engineering product teams.
Recruit, hire, manage, and mentor a diverse, equitable, and inclusive team.
Manage your direct reports' professional development (e.g., performance reviews, compensation and promotion management, routine one-on-one development conversations) and coach them on performance.
Owner of rhythm of business reviews and communication paths to senior management supporting program manager and business teams, including weekly/monthly program management reviews, finance reviews, a long-term forecasting business plan, and project deep dives.
Develop product roadmaps, including incorporation of technologies, working with internal and external customers to understand how your product integrates to meet current and future mission needs.
Work independently toward long-range objectives without appreciable direction and determine the technical objectives of assignments to develop approaches to solutions.
Embody, promote, and coach the Blue Origin leadership principles.
Minimum Qualifications
5+ years managing technical teams and/or leading functional groups with responsibility for leading and coaching employees.
Experience in the full lifecycle development of aerospace systems, including experience in one or more of requirement definition, design solution definition, implementation, integration, verification and validation, qualification, commissioning, and operation.
Understanding of the principles, concepts, and methods of system engineering for complex systems.
Experience leading multidisciplinary development projects, including managing requirements, priorities, scope, and schedule.
Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering or another technical field.
Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with clean sheet space vehicle definition and development.
Experience with verification, integration, and test, of orbital launch vehicles or human rated spacecraft.
Experience with design and development of planetary landers.
Familiar with agile project management.
Experience with space vehicle design development and test.
Experience with critical path scheduling, IMP/IMS, risk management, requirements. management and Cost Account Management such as EVM.
Experience managing subcontracts.
M.S. or Ph.D. degree in engineering or another technical field.
Compensation range for on site CO applicants is $188,347-$263,685
Compensation range for on site WA applicants is $198,908-$278,471
