DEPARTMENT OVERIVEW

The Earth Section of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography encompasses research in the Cecil H. & Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) and the Geosciences Research Division (GRD). Research in IGPP spans a broad range of topics in geophysics including seismology, geodynamics, geodesy and crustal deformation, geomorphology, planetary physics, geomagnetism and paleomagnetism, oceanography, and electrical methods. The Cecil and Ida Green IGPP is recognized internationally as an outstanding research and teaching institution in geophysics with a focus on maintaining modern infrastructure for conducting research including buildings, computer networks, computing mass storage, seagoing instrumentation, communications, and global observatories. Research in GRD embraces atmospheric, marine, and solid earth chemistry, cosmochemistry, paleoceanography and paleoclimate, stratigraphy, geobiology and paleoecology, hydrogeology, global and regional tectonics, and paleomagnetism.
POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Biogeochemistry Laboratory Technician will assist with routine experimental and analytical laboratory work. Prepare reagents and analytical standards. Maintain instruments and gas generators.

Document group laboratory protocols and edit protocols as needed. Order supplies for laboratory and some field research.

Provide technical assistance to a group studying biogeochemistry of natural and anthropogenic organic compounds in the coastal, marine environment. Position requires working knowledge of organic chemistry, dissolved organic matter biogeochemistry and analytical chemistry skills, including experience in liquid chromatography orbitrap mass spectrometry,

and bioinformatic skills including experience with MZmine 3, SIRIUS, CANOPUS and statistical packages integrated with these informatics tools.

Assist with high throughput extraction, analysis and data processing of tissue, dissolved, particulate and sediment samples.
QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in environmental science or equivalent combination of education and work experience, and research experience beyond coursework.

Theoretical knowledge of science, especially biology and chemistry.

Working knowledge of general lab equipment such as spectrophotometer, pH meter, LC, MS, nitrogen blow down equipment, centrivap, SPE, with experience in an environmental, trace level, research laboratory.

Demonstrated knowledge of statistics, R and python; demonstrated knowledge of Excalibur, MZmine 3, Sirius, CANOPUS and GNPS.

Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with purchasing procedures and requirements.

Demonstrated knowledge of hazards and skill in handling various chemicals and solvents.

Skill at keeping records to be used by others.

Must be detail oriented.

Ability to follow verbal and/or written instructions.

Good verbal communication and interpersonal skills including tact and diplomacy.

Ability to work with diverse groups of students, educators, researchers and technicians in the laboratory.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $53,766 - $64,143 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $25.75 - $30.72
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
