Scheduled Hours 37.5 Position Summary Washington University in St. Louis seeks an experienced attorney for the position of Assistant Vice Chancellor and Associate General Counsel, Research (AGC). The AGCâ™s primary responsibility is to provide legal support, advice, and counsel to the universityâ™s Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) and the university research enterprise. In addition to the OVCR, the AGC advises key stakeholders including Deans, Department Chairs, Clinical Leadership, and principal investigators. They also support teams in the Human Research Protection Office, Institutional Review Board, Office of Research Integrity and Ethics, Joint Research Office of Contracts, Sponsored Projects Accounting, Office of Sponsored Research Services, conflicts of interest programs, and the HIPAA Privacy Office. The AGC works collaboratively with other members of the Office of Vice Chancellor and General Counsel as necessary to ensure the delivery of prompt and informed legal services. Job Description Primary Duties & Responsibilities The AGC is a highly visible position that reports to the Vice Chancellor and General Counsel and works with leadership throughout the university on a variety of research-related matters:
Provides regulatory compliance support and serves as counsel to the IRB and Human Research Protection Office, conflicts of interest programs, research integrity program, and other university offices that oversee and manage the conduct of research; Serves as counsel to several university research committees, e.g., IRB, conflicts of interest, research integrity, clinical trial safety, research security, etc.; Advises principal investigators, research teams, and senior leadership regarding a variety of regulatory matters, such as federal funding agency policies and compliance, e.g., NIH, NSF, DoD; Supports the research contracts and grants offices, prepares/reviews IRB-related agreements; Collaborates with other university offices, including the University Compliance Office, on investigations, instances of noncompliance, and  corrective actions; Advises on international research, âœforeign influence,?and research security, e.g., NSPM-33; Provides HIPAA and data privacy advice related to research; and   Collaborates with the universityâ™s academic hospital partners on hospital-based research matters. Preferred Qualifications Experience in many of the following legal areas: human subjects research, conflict of interest, research integrity, federal agency funding policies, research compliance and reporting, internal investigations, FDA compliance, and research contracting. Strong background in regulatory analysis. Solid understanding of HIPAA as it applies to research activities. Familiarity with university setting. Demonstrated ability to navigate a large, complex organization. Strong critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and strategic ability. Strong and well-developed client interaction skills. Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Demonstrated ability to provide accurate, timely, thorough, and well-reasoned legal advice to senior administrators and members of the universityâ™s executive leadership team. Required Qualifications JD from an accredited law school. A current license to practice law. Active membership in the Missouri Bar, or immediate eligibility for same. Seven years of progressively responsible experience in the practice of law. Grade G00 Salary Range Base pay is commensurate with experience.
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
