Special Information This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at the Flagstaff Mountain campus with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
Job Description Reporting to the Director of Campus Recreation, the Assistant Director for Recreation Programs is responsible for the execution and administration of a comprehensive Competitive Sports Program, including Intramurals, Sport Clubs, Fitness/Wellness program, Special Events and Summer Youth programs. This position will assist with strategic and budget planning and the completion of assessments and program plans. Occasional night and weekend work may be required.
Program Management - 35%
Direct responsibility for the development, coordination, execution, and evaluation of an all-inclusive event schedule offering weekly late-night special events, quarterly departmental signature events, and collaborative events with a range of campus partners. Work directly with other Assistant Directors to coordinate departmental and university events. This includes weekly meetings, pre-event planning, equipment acquisition, risk management, event staffing, and post-event evaluation & follow-up. Additionally, this includes building relationships with clients and customers outside of Campus Recreation to promote long-term success. Provide oversight, management and support to the Fitness, Sports, and Summer Youth programs, including staff training and certification, facility reservations, budget development, and special events. Staff Supervision - 30%
Supervise up to 3 full-time benefit eligible professional staff and 50+ student employees through the programming reporting line. Supervise the development, coordination, execution and evaluation of a comprehensive Sports program. Additional oversight includes campus sport-based special events and external NIRSA tournaments and working in collaboration with the Office of Student Life, Student Government, and the Sport Club council. Supervise the development, coordination, execution and evaluation of a comprehensive Fitness program. Additional oversight includes ensuring an inclusive range of offerings through fitness classes and personal training. Supervise the development, coordination, execution and evaluation of a comprehensive Summer Youth program. Additional oversight includes a detailed plan for managing registration, documentation, hiring and training plans, and successful implementation of a robust summer day-camp program. Risk Management and Administrative Oversight - 25%
Assist in the development and revision of policies and procedures, provide support and consistency concerning the implementation of training manuals, and risk management policies for Special Events, Intramurals, Sport Clubs, Fitness & Wellness, and Summer Youth programs that align with the department and industry recognized best practices. Responsible for the development, revision and evaluation of established mission and value statements, goals and objectives for each program and service. Responsible for risk management of programs by providing staff oversight in reviewing and ensuring risk management plans are detailed and actively implemented. Fiscal Management - 5%
Monitor and evaluate budget planning and projections, track program financial data, and reconcile finances for the Competitive Sports (IM & Clubs), Fitness & Wellness, and Summer Youth accounts. Assist the Director in the development of departmental administrative and financial reports and summaries to include peer reviews and benchmark research. Other - 5%
Participate in various organizations through committee work at the university, Flagstaff community, and in professional organizations at the state, regional or national levels. Prepared to support national recreation and sporting trends as identified by department, with the intent of remaining a leader among peer institutions. Work directly with campus partners to collaborate on programs and events throughout the academic year. Perform other duties as assigned. Occasional use of sports and mechanical equipment. Occasional outdoor activity and exposure to all weather conditions. May work around or use chemicals. May work around electrical and mechanical hazards. Exposure to heights. Frequent use of sport and fixed equipment, tools, and University lift training. Occasional nights and weekend work required.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Sport or Recreation Management, Athletic Administration, Health Education/Promotion, or related field. 3-5 years of related experience in higher education with at least 2 years supervisory experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Certified American Red Cross CPR/FA. Current or willingness to obtain within first 3 months. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in Sport or Recreation Management, Athletic Administration, Health Education/Promotion, or related field. 1-2 years of direct oversight of event coordination and planning. Experience with strategic planning; setting program goals and assessment initiatives. Experience in hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating professional and student staff. Experience using event/program management applications, including Event Management System (EMS) and InnoSoft Fusion. Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining partnerships through collaboration with stakeholders. Certified Instructor American Red Cross CPR/FA. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Knowledge of management and supervisory principles and practices related to the department. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. Excellent communication, organizational and training skills. Skill in problem solving, decision-making, and critical thinking. Skill in planning, analyzing and coordinating activities and establishing priorities. Excellent customer service traits and the ability to handle conflict and diffuse situations. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team. Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds. Background Information This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary Salary range begins at $62,996. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
FLSA Status This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
Benefits This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election.
