SUMMARY

The Assistant Director, Health & Wellness reporting to the AVP of Student Affairs - Health and Wellness, has responsibility for coordinating work throughout the institute that addresses the ongoing development and improvement to the quality of student experience in relation to health and wellness - including proactive and responsive intervention, retention advocacy, responsible social life, and a successful and healthy integration into the CalArts community.

The Assistant Director will serve as the Disability Services officer, as well as working on student advocacy, and wellness programs which provides academic and personal support and resources to undergraduate and graduate students with diagnosed learning disorders; psychiatric disorders; hearing, visual, and mobility- related impairments; medical conditions; and temporary disabilities. The Assistant Director provides additional rotation duties along with the AVP of Student Affairs - Health and Wellness for the CalArts 24-7 Advocate Care phone duty program.

Reporting directly to the AVP of Student Affairs - Health and Wellness, the Assistant Director will provide strategic coordination through collaborative work regarding these important student developmental issues within the Division of Student Affairs and other Institute partners (such as Academic Advising, Campus Safety, Equity and Diversity, Financial Aid, Human Resources, International Students and Programs, Schools, and the Provost's Office).

Requirements

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Provide leadership and support in assisting with the daily operation, staffing, and strategic visioning for the Wellness Center under the guidance of the AVP of Student Affairs - Health and Wellness
Serve as the primary disability services coordinator for students with disabilities (mental health, attentional, learning, vision, hearing, physical and systemic) and ensure Institute compliance with Section 504/ADA.
Provides rotational duty coverage for the Sexual Assault Advocate On Call Duty Program.
Will serve as the lead in the absence of the AVP of Student Affairs - Health and Wellness.
Assist in hiring, training, supervising, scheduling, and evaluating assigned full time, part-time staff in the Wellness Center.
Assist in establishing policies that provide for the effective operation of the Wellness Center and support the strategic goals of the Institute around the health and wellness of the CalArts student community.
Assist in the development and implementation of care and advocacy procedures and protocols.
Assist in growing offerings to reflect the Institutes and student needs and industry trends.
Participate in the CARE team, including the monitoring and providing/coordinating intervention with students with significant retention challenges. Assist students who experience issues adjusting to academic and social life and help them navigate the Institute system.
Guide students in resolving educational, personal, and other campus impediments toward successful completion of their academic and artistic goals.
Advocate on behalf of topics regarding the student experience relating to student health and wellness.
Gather feedback on the student experience relating to student health and wellness, conduct peer benchmarking/research, and present relevant findings to administrators.
Interact regularly with students and their families, faculty, and staff, as well as with other campus and off-campus partners, as needed or appropriate.
Support, assist and advocate for students needing conflict resolution and mediation.
Provide appropriate professional development through training, advising and support to Institute colleagues regarding these areas.
Provide training for students utilizing assistive technology.
Serve on related institute committees.
This is an on-site position to be staffed at the Valencia, CA campus.

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Experience utilizing software-based file management for accommodations, i.e. Accommodate.
Excellent written verbal, human relations, organizational and time management skills.
Manage multiple projects and responsibilities.
Work with a highly selective and creative student population within a rigorous artistic setting.
Perform highly detailed work in relation to projects and student issues.
Works well under pressure responding to crisis situations.
Understanding of the interpersonal and social development of artists.
Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

An earned graduate degree (MA., M.S., M.Ed.) or terminal degree (in higher education/student affairs administration, counseling, social work, or other directly related discipline) with full-time related experience in student affairs, counseling, social work, disability services (including case management) is required. Directly related fields in a higher education setting preferred.
