Position Details Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management are seeking an intern who will work closely with the Field Office archaeologist to conduct cultural resource inventories, document archaeological sites, and monitor the condition of significant resources. Project specifics will depend on the projects in which the BLM is assessing during the intern's time with the Bureau. Projects may vary from range improvements, new recreation trails, and landscape restoration. The intern will be trained to perform in-office records searches; conduct in-field archaeological surveys and document archaeological sites to agency standards; post-process field collected data; and synthesize the findings.


Position Responsibilities will include: Performing in-office records searches through use of cultural resources databases and historic research prior to conducting survey. Conducting in-field pedestrian archaeological surveys off-trail and in remote areas. Documenting archaeological sites to agency standards including mapping, artifact analysis, feature descriptions, condition assessments, and photography. Post-processing of field collected data including data upload, notes and file organization, and project tracking. Synthesizing the findings of surveys through reports and the creation of site forms, photo pages, and maps. Minimum Requirements: Applicant must currently be enrolled in college or university. Applicant must currently be seeking a major/minor in anthropology or archaeology with at least introductory course work in one of these fields. Applicants must be comfortable working in both office and outdoor environments. Applicant must be able to hike off-trail 6 to 10 miles a day in warm to hot conditions. Applicant must be able to carry a pack large enough to hold water, food, and supplies for a day's worth of outdoor activity. Applicant must be physically located in Cedar City during the duration of the internship. This is not a remote or telework-eligible position. Applicants must pass criminal background checks for both DOI and AmeriCorps eligibility. Must be 18 years or older. Must be a US Citizen or legal permanent resident. Preferred Qualifications: Completion of an archaeology-based field school is preferred. Having a valid driver's license and the ability to drive is preferred; if driving for this position, applicant must have an insurable driving record of at least 3 years. Prior experience outdoors for work or recreation is preferred. Benefits: Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Intern will learn about the National Historic Preservation Act and how it is implemented. Intern will gain knowledge and experience of Great Basin and Colorado Plateau archaeology in southwestern Utah. Successful completion of the rigorous internship program, along with their conferred degree, DHA-RAI Program participants that meet Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for a BLM mission-critical/hard-to-fill occupation may be directly appointed without competition to a full time, permanent position vacancy.
