The Office of Medical Student Education at the University of Michigan Medical School seeks a dynamic and dedicated individual to lead and direct the OMSE - Evaluation and Assessment unit. The incumbent will oversee all aspects of evaluations and assessments for the undergraduate medical education program and is responsible for supporting activities related to academic and program review, helping the program to develop a culture of continuous quality improvement through leadership, collaboration, strategic visioning, data informed decision making, and consistency.
This position will report directly to the Senior Director for Medical Student Education and work closely with education Associate Deans, Assistant Deans, unit directors, faculty, and staff.
Provide strategic direction and operational oversight to the Evaluation and Assessment unit within the Office of Medical Student Education. Supervise unit staff, foster a team-oriented culture focused on quality improvement, develop work plans and systems for cross training and back-up (including by and for the Director), complete mid-year and end-of-year performance evaluations, provide timely feedback, and establish individualized professional development plans. Develop and implement strategic planning for the Evaluation and Assessment Office for existing operations and innovations for evolving curricula, and evaluation and assessment practices. Interface with faculty, staff, and students to provide expertise, customer service, and problem solving. Prepare, oversee, and manage budgets related to unit operations, and learner assessment and program evaluation. Proactively directs and supervises the data collection, analysis and reporting of medical school teaching and course evaluations, phase evaluations, and administrative support services in order to inform robust program evaluation and imbue a culture of continuous quality improvement. Partners with OMSE units to develop program evaluation processes within each unit. Prepare assessment accreditation reports for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and other accrediting agencies, as well as reports for various stakeholders. Develop, implement, and maintain standards of practice that guide establishment of protocols and procedures for data collection and interpretation.  Design and manage analyses to ensure accuracy of all evaluation data and reports. Implement processes to encourage first-time quality, reproducibility, and sustainability of data/reports. Maintain, preserve, and protect the integrity and confidentiality of data and their sources. Lead all aspects of high-quality assessment leading to the MD degree. This includes assessments that are formative and summative, course-based, and phase and longitudinal based, and standardized patient-based. Lead the development, organization, analysis and reporting/communication of student learning outcomes. Oversee systems, policies, and procedures related to quizzes and examinations, education assignments, question banks, exam grading system, evaluation instruments/tools, and surveys.  Ensure NBME standards and practices are upheld in the testing environment. Facilitate the provision of testing accommodations in partnership with the OMSE ? Student Services Learning and Ability unit. Provide oversight and management of Competency Committee processes in order to inform, monitor and drive student advancement.  Direct data strategies and processes in support of the development of databases and systems to advance precision-based medical education and streamline efforts specific to high-quality program evaluation and student performance metrics. Analyze data and create reports to be shared with medical school leadership and relevant committees to inform policies and decision-making. These range from analysis of admissions data for predicting medical student performance to academic surveillance reports for early medical education and clinical medical education, to post-degree residency director survey data. Lead, initiate, consult and collaborate with faculty to design and conduct medical education/curricular research projects through the analysis of evaluation and assessment data. Partner on grant writing efforts to support medical education research initiatives. Provide expertise in research methodology (research design and methods, survey methodology, data collection/analysis) to new and existing research studies. Promote medical education scholarship through presentation at national and local conferences. Lead collaborations with medical school departments and units to advance programmatic innovations, advocate for supportive technologies, and ensure quality and efficiency in all evaluations and assessment activities. Effectively partner and problem solve with institutional IT divisions in order to ensure functionality of assessment systems, data integrity, and data security. Serve as the OMSE liaison to school and institutional Data Governance committees. Masters degree or PhD in relevant discipline (e.g. education, mathematics, statistics, etc.). Five or more years of experience in higher education.  Past experience in a supervisory capacity. Excellent statistical and analytical experience. Exceptional communication skills. Knowledge of medical education teaching and assessment trends. Established understanding of educational research design and methods. Expertise in learner-based assessments, including developing or testing assessment tools and strategies, and scholarly work in the area. Budgetary experience.    Degree in mathematics, statistics, biostatistics, or education preferred. Experience with National Board of Medical Examiners subject based examinations.  Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
