Course description: 470.728 -Fundamentals of Nonprofits & Nonprofit Management : The goal of this course is to convey the history, size and impact of the nonprofit and philanthropic sector while providing the fundamentals of nonprofit management. In the United States, the flourishing of nonprofit initiative is intertwined with our country's legal and tax systems, the needs of the nation in wartime, interest groups addressing social and economic inequities, the federal role in social service delivery and foreign aid, rising wealth, and perceived threats to internal security. Successful nonprofits today must have strong management systems in place to assure quality programs for service and impact. These systems include management of finances, human resources, information technology, marketing, performance measures and other aspects of operations. The course will help the student understand the current thinking regarding "best practices" in managing and improving nonprofit organizations and appreciate the interplay of environmental and organizational factors that influence managerial decision-making. Throughout the course, there will be a comparative perspective that looks at the scope and status of nongovernmental organizations in other countries and the influences on those organizations by their own governments, foreign aid, and international philanthropy. Many of the principles recommended as "best practice" can be applied to nongovernmental organizations in other countries as well. This course uses a simulation pedagogy centered around one core assignment where students actively conceptualize and build their own nonprofit. This is the first course for the MA in Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Management and Certificate in Nonprofit Management.
Instructional and administrative responsibilities of the position include:
Attend adjunct faculty kick-off and other professional development meetings; Teach one online graduate course (unless there is a demand for more than one section) using Blackboard (or Canvas) per year; Personalize the graduate course by identifying relevant academic materials, resources, digital media, recording original content for introductory videos, and revise any lectures that need revision, frequently lead in-class discussions; Use online tools such as Voicethread, Panopto or others; Grade assignments and provide regular feedback to students on the online discussion threads and in the grade center; Answer student inquiries via email within 24 - 48 hours; Be aware of, and in compliance with, all JHU AAP policies as an adjunct and instructor; Complete other administrative duties associated with teaching as assigned; Participate in the signature assessment assignment activities (on a case by case basis); Report to and be in regular touch with the Program Director on policy updates, faculty summits, advisory committees, curriculum development, student needs, etc. Salary:  Gross salary is $7000/per course at full capacity (10+ students) for one full semester of teaching.
Qualifications Desired qualifications:
