The International Institute (II) is seeking a team member responsible to manage and with the goal of providing high quality programming, administration, and grant management for the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies (CMENAS). The Center is one of six National Resource Centers (NRCs) at the International Institute. This prestigious designation, earned in national peer-reviewed competition, is awarded by the U.S. Department of Education Title VI program every four years. The Center is also a recipient of grants for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships. CMENAS administers annual competition to award undergraduate and graduate-level fellowships to support the study of foreign languages.
The Academic Program Specialist liaises with U-M departments, partner institutions, and U.S. Department of Education, collaborates with staff, faculty, and student networks within the II, and manages the Title VI Department of Education Grant (******** grant cycle).
This is a term-limited position- end date August 14, 2026. Renewal subject to funding.
The Academic Program Specialist serves as a lead CMENAS representative on campus. Works closely with other center staff and directors on strategic planning, short- and long-term programming, communications, and grant mandates and reports. Collaborates with II, U-M units, and other partners to deliver programming and promote the centers initiatives and academic programs. Serves as a CMENAS administrative contact to other II Centers, LSA departments, other U-M units, and NRCs.
Administration and Grant Management: 
Academic Program Specialists engages in grant-writing and grant administration by preparing letters of interest, proposals, and budgets; serves as the Center liaison to the U.S. Department of Education and other NRCs; tracks and projects data, assesses needs and goals for the ******** Title VI U.S. Department of Education grant; writes detailed report narratives; submits Title VI budgets and reports in coordination with the U.S. Department of Education deadlines; processes all Center financial and grant transactions within university and federal guidelines; manages financial processes including co-sponsorship requests, faculty and educator awards, institutional memberships, honoraria, travel reimbursements, and special initiatives within the Title VI grant; drafts budgets and engages in financial planning in consultation with Center director and cluster manager; maintains detailed and accurate budgetary records; attends II NRC planning meetings to coordinate grant reporting regarding shared projects. Works with Center director, cluster manager and ORSP to identify other sources of grant funding; works closely with the associate director in managing academic programs as well as students funding.
Programming:
The APS organizes and coordinates CMENAS sponsored and co-sponsored activities such as 
the CMENAS Colloquium Series, lectures, seminars, conferences, and faculty and student workshops; and meets with Center directors each term to determine event and programming priorities in conjunction with Title VI NRC programming initiatives. This includes arranging logistics of Center events from invitations to room scheduling, management of co-sponsorships, hosting responsibilities, and engaging in advertising and marketing. The APS coordinates planning of Colloquium Series for the fall semester; plans at least two additional events and one career event determined by the Title VI grant in consultation with the director and associate director; serves as a liaison to other departments on campus to support co-sponsored programming.
Collaboration and Communications:
The APS collaborates with U-M units and other II partners to deliver programming; promotes the center's initiatives including writing press releases, preparing newsletters, and updating website; disperses nationwide Middle East professional development and other opportunities to listservs on a regular basis; promotes CMENAS undergraduate and graduate academic programs; attends meetings; attends the annual Middle Eastern Studies Association Conference as well as the National Resource Centers meetings and training when necessary.
Bachelor's degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience in program planning, management, and delivery. Ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people in educational and public-facing settings. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in teams. Experience in a fast-paced working environment with ability to shift gears and remain focused on the multiple demands of the job. Eagerness to learn, adaptability to changing needs, and willingness to take on new roles as needed. Experience working with websites and social media. Ability to define the scope of new initiatives with respect to time and financial resources, and manage ambiguity. Ability to occasionally work in the evenings or on weekends. Ability to travel to various locations to conduct work and deliver materials. Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google, and Adobe. Master's degree in education in Middle East and North African Studies or a related field. Experience in higher education and working with federal grants. Experience working with diverse communities. Familiarity with area studies. Professional or working knowledge of one or more of the area languages.

The salary range for this position is $43,300 to $54,000, please note a higher salary may be offered based on equity and the selected candidate's experience.
