The Department of Genetic Medicine is seeking a Sr.  Research Specialist for the growing new laboratory of Prof. Greg Newby, which is focused on the development and application of cutting-edge genome editing tools to mammalian cell and mouse models of genetic disease. The Sr. Research Specialist will be responsible for the scientific and administrative activities of the laboratory. Prior experience in genome editing methods is not required and training will be provided on the job. The position requires experience in molecular biology and genetics research and the ability to work well with collaborations and teams.
The position will have responsibility for the oversight of laboratory members, equipment, and reagents, as well as the ability to apply a wide range of sophisticated assays including RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, digital PCR, and bioinformatic analysis. The applicant should be comfortable with identifying, developing, and optimizing molecular biology assays. Administratively, the position involves the onboarding and oversight of other staff members, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities Scientific: 75% Experimental Responsibilities Learn, perform, and train lab members in sophisticated laboratory methods to optimize and characterize genome editing outcomes (mammalian cell culture, isolation of DNA and RNA, PCR, digital or quantitative real-time PCR, DNA cloning, next-generation sequencing by Illumina and Oxford Nanopore, quantitative and qualitative analyses of DNA, RNA, and protein molecules). Contributes to the maintenance of the laboratory, equipment, and supplies; conducts routine safety tests. Maintains careful records of all samples obtained and experiments performed. Independently assesses the quality of generated data and produces summary charts with statistical analyses. Animal Model Responsibilities Independently maintains mouse colonies; genotyping/weighing of mice. Dissection of mice for anatomical, histological, and nucleotide sequencing studies. Administrative Responsibilities: 25% Responsible for budget management. Manages budgetary duties by ensuring charges, invoices, and orders are correctly routed to the proper grant. Responsible for daily ordering of laboratory consumables, reagents, supplies, and equipment; maintains financial records. Assists with drafting and refining scientific documents including manuscripts, grant applications, and letters of recommendation. Ensures laboratory protocols and biosafety approvals are up-to-date. Helps to hire, supervise, and train incoming laboratory members. Advises personnel on proper laboratory techniques and use of laboratory equipment. Ensures the laboratory and staff comply with annual safety inspections and safety office recommendations. Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Experience with molecular biology techniques, cell culture, and mouse work (as above). Must have a working knowledge of one or more of the following disciplines achieved through undergraduate studies and laboratory experience: biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, microbiology, and/or genetics. Physical Requirements Must be able to work in BSL2+ cell culture and mouse facilities.
Supervisory Responsibility Postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. Additional research staff hiring is planned as projects continue to ramp up. Budget Authority $500,000 per year, makes purchasing decisions. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in biology, chemistry, or related field. Four years experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques. Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Preferred Qualifications Experience with RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, or other high throughput genome analysis methods. Classified Title: Sr. Research Specialist

Starting Salary Range: Min. $47,500.00 - Max. $83,300.00 (Targeted $65,400.00, Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
