Title: Specimen Collector
Primary Function: The Specimen Collectors primary function is to facilitate the collection, processing, and shipping of human specimen (i.e., urine, saliva, DNA) from the clinic to the laboratory.
Each specimen must be properly labeled & documented. The specimen must also be prepared for shipment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Demonstrate customer service and compassion when interacting with patients, physicians, and clinical staff. Communicate with, understand, and react effectively to a diverse patient population base. Comply in all respects with Company's compliance program and participate in compliance training as often as requested by Company. Master trainings in HIPAA Compliance on a yearly basis and strictly adhere to HIPAA Guidelines Insure accurate and complete laboratory requisition forms. Maintain detailed reports of collection activities including calls, supply orders, insurance information, changes in demographics, and any patient or provider relationship problems. Ensure effective communication between the collection site, the assigned sales manager, and Molecular Testing Labs. Represent Molecular Testing Labs professionally. Work in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules & regulations. Maintain neat, clean, orderly work areas at all times. Order collection supplies as needed. Skills, Knowledge, Abilities Mental Abilities and Skills Requirements: Reliable attendance with a strong work ethic Must be punctual Communicate information & ideas both verbally & in written format. Strong computer skills & the ability to multitask: Manage emails & reporting obligations. Identifying complex problems & review related information to develop and evaluate options & implement solutions. Developing constructive & cooperative working relationships with others & maintaining them over time. Ability to work independently, successfully manage workload, work under pressure, and adapting to changes in the work environment are essential. Specimen Collector Role: Perform only one specimen collection at a time Prohibit unauthorized personnel from entering the collection site during the collection process. Restrict access to collection supplies before and during collection process. Ensure that chain of custody is maintained & documented throughout the collection procedure Ensure integrity of collected specimen sample. Knowledge Needed: Knowledge of collection devices, shipping protocols & HIPAA Training Knowledge of principles & processes for laboratory requisition forms, Electronic Portal ordering & reporting procedures. Knowledge of principles & methods for collecting unique identifying information & accurate demographic information upon the initial visit. Education and Certification Education/Experience Requirements: High School Diploma or Equivalent (required) Experience with Microsoft Office/Computing/Internet (preferred) Experience in a specimen collection capacity (preferred but not required *training to be provided) Fast & Accurate Data Entry (preferred) Certifications: HIPAA (Internal training- Must be passed.) Physical Requirements: Must be able to pass a preemployment drug screen. Must be able to sit or stand for up to 8 hours per day. Occasionally required to lift up to 20 lbs Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach and move about facilities. Must be able to be physically present when needed (Reliable Transportation) Work Environment: Collector Site - Provisions for patient privacy while he/she provides the specimen sample. A means for washing hands. A suitable clean surface, inaccessible to the patient for the collect to use as a work area. A secure temporary storage area for maintaining specimens until they are transferred to the library. Lab Environment - Noise levels vary based on flow of business Most floors are tile or concrete - individuals may stand for extended periods of time on these surfaces Tools and Technology: MTL Requisition Forms & Documents Collection Devices & Shipping Supplies Desktop computer & laptop Scanners & printers Access to the Molecular Physician Portal Hazards: Work is performed in a office environment, full manual dexterity and visual acuity required. However, access to the laboratory may be necessary and therefore employee may be exposed to potential physical harm from hazardous chemicals, infectious diseases, blood-borne pathogens, toxic materials, toxic gases, electrical hazards, dangerous tools and equipment.
