The Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute (VGTI) at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) has assembled a multidisciplinary team of scientists to respond to serious viral disease threats, including AIDS, chronic viral infection-associated diseases, newly emerging viral diseases and infectious diseases of the elderly. Our programs are intended to span the continuum between basic and clinical science, in which discoveries are rapidly advanced from the level of molecular and cellular biology through animal models and ultimately into clinical testing. The development of this unique program in immunology and virology provides an important training opportunity for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at OHSU. This is why an important part of our mission is the training of young scientists in newer academic disciplines emerging at the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute.
Responsible for management, coordination, and support for ongoing and newly funded projects using non-human primates (NHP) in the study of the immune system, immunodeficiencies, infectious diseases, and SPF programs for the Smedley Lab, located on the West Campus of OHSU. An increased responsibility for managing/coordinating protocols, scheduling procedures with multiple research projects, research units, and animal program units.
Responsibility for training and supervising of research assistants, coordinators, and associates. Responsible for preparation of written reports and, as applicable, regulatory documentation, laboratory/image analysis, and materials for manuscripts/grants. Responsible for inventory, budgeting and procurement to ensure that the Smedley Lab has the supplies/equipment needed to successfully conduct its research. Performing a variety of laboratory procedures, including cell separation, immunoassays, and cell culture. Assist and/or perform surgeries of non-human primates, (including scheduling, and administration of drugs). Collection and preparation of blood samples, shipping and handling of animal tissues to various support laboratories. Will be required to interact with veterinary staff, animal care staff, surgical staff, and in some cases to facilitate social environmental enrichment of non-human primates. Collection, data entry, and statistical analysis of data and reporting of research findings in written and oral formats. Assist with ordering and replenishment of supplies for laboratory and surgical procedures. General lab support duties, including maintenance of laboratory supplies and equipment, autoclaving and disposal of waste. Education Master's in relevant field AND 3 year of relevant experience. OR Equivalent combination of training and experience
May require specific experience in particular area
of research. Experience Has a minimum of 8 years of laboratory experience in molecular/cellular biology, animal, and/or invivo research.
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies): Ability to communicate effectively, including use and meaning of scientific terminology, in both written and oral formats; Ability to work both independently and in a small group setting; Working knowledge (18 months relevant work experience) of Microsoft Excel, Word. Demonstrated independence and competence to perform data management and analysis of research findings, including use of spreadsheets, graphics and statistical programs; Ability to interact in a positive and productive manner, and to work efficiently and skillfully with a variety of diverse staff; Ability to prioritize work demands, and coordinate research protocols with other staff; Organizational skills and careful attention to details to satisfactorily perform job duties requiring procedural steps to be consistent and completed fully and timely. Detailed record keeping, cataloging of samples, data entry and statistical analysis, laboratory maintenance, autoclaving and use of sterile techniques. Willingness to work with pathogens potentially dangerous to humans. Willingness to work in Biosafety Level 2 and 3 facilities. Willingness and ability to work flexible hours. Ability and willingness to work independently. Ability to carry and lift 35 lbs. Ability to stand for three continuous hours a day. Ability to work on computer for five continuous hours a day. Able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation. Education Master's in relevant field AND 3 year of relevant experience. OR Equivalent combination of training and experience Degree in Biology, Zoology, Animal sciences, immunology or pathology. Experience with large primate studies, managing mutltiple research projects, and performing, analysizing and reporting resutls of immune assays. Experience 8 years laboratory work experience performing immunoassays and cell separation techniques.
3 years experience in managing labs or research units, training and supervising of students and RA's.
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies): Maintaining inventories of laboratory supplies and equipment; experience with geriatic or immune compromised and ABSL3 with non-human primates.
