Definition of Class The Mississippi Law Research Institute at the University of Mississippi School of Law is seeking applications for a Research Counsel to lead the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Legal Program (). The Legal Program has conducted legal research, education, and outreach since 1972 as the legal research arm of the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium. The Research Counsel is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing the Legal Program's projects and activities.
Examples of Work Performed Conducting legal research Producing a quarterly newsletter Writing grant proposals Managing grant awards and budgets Supervising law student research assistants Maintaining website and social media content Delivering conference and community presentations Serving as an active member of the MASGC outreach team. Essential Functions These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.
Conceives improvements in both substantive and adjective law and makes recommendations concerning them to the legislature. Examines and analyzes law with the objective of discovering defects and inequities and of recommending needed reforms. Provides research, counsel, and drafting assistance to the legislature and state and local government agencies for the development and revision of laws and regulations. Advises and assists local governments, state agencies and associations by performing legal research and preparation of related materials, such as statues and ordinances, reports, manuals, handbooks, codes and by conducting courses of instruction for the more efficient application of law and utilization of governmental resources. Prepares and publishes texts and other scholarly works on law and procedure to aid in the administration of government. Conducts research on complicated matters of Mississippi and United States law and procedure and prepare briefs and reports of research for publication. Minimum Education/Experience Education:
Juris Doctor degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association.
AND

Experience:
Two (2) years of experience related to the above described duties.

AND

Licensure:
Admission to practice law.
Candidates with experience and interest in ocean, coastal, and marine resources law are preferred.
