The Properties Designer is responsible for assessing and designing all physical hand props used by performers in a production. Using the Director's concept as a guide, the Properties Designer analyzes the script and creates a properties list consisting of all items mentioned and implied in the script by the author. Throughout rehearsals the Director may request additional props to help develop the story. At times, this communication may be made through the Stage Manager through production reports. The Properties Designer attends creative development sessions with other production team members to determine the world of the show. Final show designs will be approved by the Director and Producers. The designer will then meet with the Head of Properties to develop a plan to execute the design.
The Properties Designer is required to attend all production and development meetings, as well as attend previews and all technical rehearsals to ensure the items in their design are correct and properly working. Any adjustments or notes must be communicated with the props department.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for obtaining all props needed for the production. The designer will design and prepare, as well as assist in pulling, modifying, buying, or building properties for the assigned production. All properties and set pieces must be built to a quality able withstand the rigors of the performance up to 150+ performances. Provide scale drawings and mock-ups of props (as requested) by directors and/or prop artisans. Assist the loading in and out of properties and set pieces during rehearsals and tech. Paint props and scenery using best practices and techniques. Work with stage managers, and directors to ensure the safe use, care, and training for all properties, set pieces, pyrotechnics, traps, etc. Attend production and department meetings as scheduled. Create and maintain properties lists for the assigned production. Attend first rehearsals/design presentations for the assigned production. Works with Stage Management to have rehearsal or actual properties available at the beginning of the rehearsal period for the production. May be called upon to collaborate on the design of scenic dressing. Attend tech and dress rehearsals for the assigned production. Have all properties completed and delivered for the dress rehearsal of the assigned production. Attend all production related meetings and events in accordance with the production timeline.  In coordination with the Head of Properties, creates a plan to maintain the props, and duplicate or replacement props as needed. Creates prop plots and passing them on to stage management. May be asked to attend specific rehearsals as requested by the Director and/or Stage Management Attend a Designer and/or Producer Preview Attending technical and dress rehearsals. Maintain a clean, safe, equitable, and organized working environment. Remain within the assigned budget for the production. WORKS CLOSELY WITH: Directing Team Stage Management Team Scenic Designer Technical Director Costume Designer Performers Reports directly to Chief Production Officer and Head of Properties EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED: Minimum 3 years experience in designing properties for large scale musicals Knowledge of up-to-date theatre safety policies, procedures and guidelines Ability to collaborate with a team of creators to produce a cohesive vision Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills Excellent analytical and problem solving skills Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and climb stairs and ladders comfortably High degree of organizational skills with the ability to be flexible and multi-task with accuracy This position entails working as a 1099 contractor, with compensation set at $5,000 per production.
