The PRN/Relief Nurse is a key health care provider responsible for nursing assessment, direct nursing care, and appropriate medical record documentation for all students who are cared for at the Student Health Center during clinical work hours. This position covers work shifts on a PRN/Relief basis for specific dates when additional coverage is required.

Essential Functions: The PRN/Relief Nurse is the key health care provider responsible for nursing assessment, direct nursing care, and appropriate medical record documentation for all students who present to the Student Health Center during clinical work hours. The PRN/Relief Nurse assists the physician/ physician assistant as needed during scheduled appointment hours, and is responsible for follow through on evaluation/ treatment orders and medical record documentation. The PRN/Relief Nurse is responsible for nursing assessment, direct nursing care, assisting students with meals, carrying out evaluation/ treatment orders, and appropriate medical record documentation for students cared for in the SHC Infirmary. The PRN/Relief Nurse has shared responsibility with the other nurses and administrative staff in the Student Health Center for maintaining supplies, records, facility and other necessary functions for continued smooth operations of a 24/7 college health service. The PRN/Relief Nurse must be physically capable of performing the job duties. Must have the ability to help lift and move patients as well as the ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop and stretch for prolonged periods. Must be able to see color changes on patients' skin, have the ability to listen to heart and lung sounds through a stethoscope and feel skin temperature and palpate pulses. Vital sensory abilities include near vision, far vision, perceptual speed, visual color discrimination, depth perception, and hearing sensitivity. Motor abilities are vital. Must be able to manipulate equipment in a safe and effective way. Finger dexterity, arm-hand steadiness, and manual dexterity are vital abilities. Must be able to communicate with patients, families, and other health care workers. Speech clarity, speech recognition and written expression are vital abilities for performing the job. Other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: There are three shifts that may need coverage—the Day shift schedule is 7 AM-3 PM, the Evening shift schedule is 3 PM-11 PM, and the Night shift schedule is 11 PM-7 AM. The PRN/Relief Nurse needs to be comfortable working alone after 5 PM to provide nursing assessment and care, with a medical and counseling provider on call/available by phone, and ER backup for true emergencies. On weekdays other staff works until 5 PM. On weekends there is no other staff on site. Scheduled work shifts (up to 8 hours) for PRN/Relief as needed, specific dates/schedule to be determined by the department. Shorter work shifts may occasionally be scheduled to cover for nursing activities such as flu vaccine clinics, etc. Minimum Pay: $34.00/ hour. Minimum Qualifications: This position requires current R.N. licensure for nursing practice in Virginia, current CPR certification, pertinent clinical experience and knowledge of current healthcare practices, dedication to continuing professional education, and the ability to work independently with on-call physician/counselor backup. Professional demeanor, common sense, excellent clinical and interpersonal skills, and a consistent record of attendance and punctuality are necessary. This position requires strong verbal and written communication skills, the personal maturity to deal effectively with ill and/or troubled students, maintain confidentiality of personal health information, and work effectively as a professional staff member on a multidisciplinary health care team.
