Details of the offer

General Description This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.
Research Title: Forward-Looking Building Codes that Address Climate Change
The work will entail: The Infrastructure Materials Group serves as the world-class resource for developing and promoting the use of science-based tools - measurements, data, models, protocols, and reference standards - to enhance both the global competitiveness of U.S. industry through innovations in building materials and construction technology; and the safety, security, and sustainability of the nation's buildings and physical infrastructure, including adaptation efforts due to climate change. NIST works with industry and science to advance innovation and improve quality of life. This position will play a critical role in building a vibrant and innovative research program focused on understanding the relative impact of building materials on the resilience of the built environment and developing tools, which are hardware and software-based, to evaluate the durability of these materials. Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to: - Developing, conducting, and reporting on research in building materials, sustainability, and resilience as it relates to building codes and standards with the impact of climate change. - Employing modeling methods to aggregate data, simulate physical phenomena, and identify trends in the context of material properties. These modeling efforts will be validated whenever possible. - Engaging with industry stakeholders and contributing technical expertise to the development of standards. Disseminating research results through presentations at conferences and publication of authoritative journal papers and reports.
