The CEES Lab Research Supervisor provides oversight and leadership in establishing and maintaining a state-of-the-art, coordinated laboratory system, including analytical instrumentation, laboratory equipment, and safety oversight, that serves CEES students, faculty, and staff. The CEES Lab Research Supervisor oversees the day-to-day operations of all CEES research and teaching laboratories in Carson Engineering Center, and assists in the operation of other CEES labs, such as the Broce Asphalt Lab. The CEES Lab Research Supervisor maintains, facilitates, and coordinates the use of analytical instrumentation and laboratory facilities to support research and teaching activities. The CEES Lab Research Supervisor oversees the operations of laboratories serving undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and faculty to ensure a safe and productive research and teaching environment. 
Duties: Oversees day-to day laboratory operations, coordinating with scientific/research staff. Supervises staff and student employees, including hiring, training and evaluation.  Evaluates workload and capacity of personnel to continually enhance operations and make recommendations for improvement. Documents processes in detail and creates standardized protocol formats. Assists with the development and implementation of standardized operating procedures. Develops schedules and timelines for projects. Monitors tasks and manages projects, implementing changes as needed to complete projects within scheduled time frame. Assists with associated project reporting. Oversees health and safety procedures for laboratory operations. Orders and maintains laboratory inventory. Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs equipment. Provides support for laboratory courses and departmental research. Oversees health and safety procedures for laboratory operations. Orders and maintains laboratory inventory. Performs related duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
Job Location
Required Education: Bachelor's degree, AND : 
18 months of experience working in a basic science research facility/laboratory with supervisory responsibilities. Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree for a total of 66 months of related experience.
Skills :
Ability to operate laboratory equipment and instruments. Ability to troubleshoot and repair laboratory equipment. Demonstrated laboratory skills, for example: experience with analytical glassware, syringes, pipettes, balances, and benchtop meters. Knowledge of laboratory safety practices.  Experience in supervising and training others. Excellent communication skills, including technical writing. Proficient with Microsoft Office. Ability to read technical instructions and diagrams, ability to make precise measurements.  Strong interpersonal skills. High level of organization and ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines. Detail oriented for accuracy of data and information. Certifications :
Valid driver's license required for travel. Advertised Physical Requirements: Regular pressure to meet productivity standards; frequent exposure to pressure caused by deadlines and busy periods; may be required to travel locally; ability to engage in repetitive motions; grasp objects fingers or hands; speak, including expressing oneself or exchanging information with others; and see, including color, depth perception and clarity. May be required to crawl under equipment and climb ladders. Must be able to move 40 pounds. This position will require occasional local travel during normal business hours. Supervision: Oversight and guidance for undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and faculty to ensure a safe and productive research and teaching environment. Departmental Preferences: Bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering or a related science or engineering discipline Master's degree or additional laboratory training/certificates Experience working with a diverse set of stakeholders, including students, faculty, and staff. Experience with load cells and mechanical testing equipment. Experience with the safe use of compressed gas cylinders and gas lines. Experience with installing, calibrating, and troubleshooting sensors for a variety of experiments, and with connecting such sensors to data acquisition systems and collecting data.
