Job Description Summary
The Data Scientist is responsible for building analytical processes and models, and oversees data science projects independently, including monitoring progress and proactively identifying barriers. Executes data analysis, machine learning, predictive modeling, statistics, visualization, and other data science techniques to derive actionable insights.

Job Description The Data Scientist will: Employ advanced analytical techniques to obtain clinically meaningful, actionable insights, including automating, illuminating, and predicting outcomes related to disease, injury, or recovery. Work with clinical and research teams to design appropriate data collection procedures and analyses, and oversee the continued implementation of these procedures to ensure the integrity and appropriate handling of data. Develop and implement data-driven solutions to enhance clinical and research operations, in compliance with SRAlab policies and regulatory rules that pertain to quality improvement and human clinical research. Work on EDW projects to streamline processes to handle research & clinical grade data to probing, testing, and analysis. Design, validate, and implement data-based products and processes to add business value for internal and external customers. Maintain knowledge and proficiency in state-of-the art machine learning and deep learning techniques, including best practices for training and validating models for clinical applications. Create analytical processes for automated machine-driven decision making where human decision making is not scalable or feasible. Work with internal stakeholders to develop advanced analyses that help them solve challenging business problems. Select features, build, and optimize classifiers using machine learning techniques. Enhance data collection procedures to include information that is relevant for building analytic systems. Process, clean, and verify the integrity of data used for analysis. Conduct ad-hoc analysis and present results in a clean, clear, and actionable manner. Perform statistical modeling and hypothesis testing. Design, train, and validate results from a breadth of machine learning and deep learning algorithms. Write clean, efficient, well-documented code. Deploy applications into cloud-based infrastructures (e.g., AWS). Build, test, and deploy computer vision-based solutions. Publish original studies in refereed journals that advance the clinical discipline or research field, and participate in scientific review of publications and grants. Assist the principal investigator with preparing research proposals and grant applications to secure external research funding. Assist the principal investigator with developing productive collaborations with other established investigators. Perform other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Reporting Relationships Varies based on organization of the Data Scientist III's Ability Lab. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required PhD in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Engineering or related field. Minimum of 6 years of experience (including time as a PhD student) with a high proficiency in data collection, extraction, statistical analysis, and modeling. Expertise in translating strategic questions into tactical work plans and outputs. Demonstrated success in scientific creativity, collaboration with others, and independent thought.  Experience working with large, complex data sets, normalizing and building training sets and models, and using advanced machine learning techniques to combine and compare large datasets. Ability to install and configure tools needed for analysis of large datasets. Excellent understanding of machine learning techniques and algorithms, such as kNN, Naïve Bayes, SVM, Decision Trees, etc. Experience with common data science toolkits, such as R, Python, Weka, Anaconda, etc. Ability to present results of analysis to a broad range of audiences, including lay audiences or audiences within healthcare on both the financial and clinical side (CFO, CEO, CMIO, Physicians, etc.). Experience with data visualization tools, such as D3.js, ggplot2, etc. Strong applied statistics skills, such as distributions, statistical testing, regression, time-series analysis, etc. Strong scripting and programming skills. Experience leading, mentoring, and collaborating with other research staff (students, research assistants, project coordinators, postdoctoral fellows, clinicians, etc.). Proficiency in preparing grant proposals, research reports, and other publications. Able to use professional concepts and apply company policies/procedures to work on problems/issues of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Understanding of the challenges of large-scale cloud deployment of products developed from data science techniques. Knowledge of current Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and its application in clinical research, including ethics, subject protection, and IRB requirements. Working Conditions Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
