Bridge Engineering Section Salem The role: Our Bridge Engineering Section is recruiting for two bridge engineering assistants to join our team! One position will work in our Bridge Operations Unit and one position will work in our Bridge Preservation Unit.
This role is a great all-around introduction to the work that Bridge Section does. Working as a bridge engineering assistant offers the opportunity to experience inspection, inventory, planning, and design for bridges and related structures. You will get to experience all parts of our section's mission statement: "In support of a safe and reliable multimodal transportation system, Bridge Engineering Section strives to improve and maintain an inventory of bridges and structures, through active asset management, project delivery and technical expertise."

A day in the life: Schedule and perform initial and in-service inspections for bridges and other structures under guidance of a senior bridge inspector.
Assess the condition of bridges and identify the urgency of any needed repairs.
Design repairs for simple to moderately complex bridges under the guidance of a licensed bridge engineer.
Perform bridge and structures engineering of bridges and other transportation-related structures.
Participate on project delivery teams and in meetings.
Develop procedures for evaluating bridges, including creating flow charts and guidance documents.
Evaluate state owned bridges and assess structure and sub-structure type, seismic and scour risk categories, and safety features.
Complete engineering analysis and load rating of new and existing bridges.
Review construction submittals and assist structural design engineers to provide emergency response support.
Work is performed in the office and outdoors – hybrid work options available (at least two days in the office, up to full-time).
This position works outdoors more than 50% of the time – bridge inspection is regularly performed outdoors, year-round, in all weather conditions and in hazardous locations including significant heights above ground, over water and traffic.
Considerable travel required, including frequent overnight stays away from the office.

Special qualifications: Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

Experience working outdoors.
