Full job description Introduction The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) has an opening for a Veterans Benefit Specialist to serve as part of the team in the Veterans Benefits Resource Center. This position is headquartered at our Rimrock Road Office, which is conveniently located 5 minutes from downtown Madison, just off the Beltline and the Capitol City bike path.

Position Summary This position is responsible for aiding veterans seeking assistance with eligibility for programs and benefits offered or facilitated by WDVA. The incumbent provides initial review of eligibility for programs and benefits. Other duties include logging telephone inquiries, distributing mail/files, reviewing veterans' information for follow up, responding to inquiries, documenting information, and updating records.

Salary Information The starting salary for this position is between $21.33 and $25.19 an hour ($44,366 and $52,395 annually), depending on candidate qualifications. Current state employees' pay will be based on the provisions in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan. This classification is in Pay Schedule 12, Pay Range 64. A twelve-month probationary period will be required.
Job Details Due to the nature of this position, WDVA will conduct criminal background checks prior to an offer of hire.

Qualifications Minimally-qualified applicants will have:
Experience assisting internal and external customers, and/or stakeholders with questions by utilizing a variety of communication methods (e.g., phone, email, fax, in person, etc.); and Experience and/or training utilizing computer programs for data entry (e.g., Microsoft Access, Excel, Outlook, Word, or comparable). Well-qualified candidates will also have experience processing applications (e.g., reviewing eligibility for programs, approving, denying, etc.).
