Freedom House, a domestic and sexual violence agency, is searching for an Adult Counselor to serve domestic violence clients in Bureau, Marshall, Putnam, Stark, and Henry County. The Adult Counselor is responsible for providing counseling and advocacy services. These services are based on the philosophy of empowerment, collaboration, and close communication with agency co-workers and representatives from referral sources. The Adult Counselor will fully support the agency's mission, philosophy, and values by exhibiting professionalism, confidentiality, excellence, competence, teamwork, innovation, respect, personalization, commitment to the communities/persons served and accountability/ownership.
Domestic Violence Counseling Philosophy Domestic violence counseling is client-centered with the goal of supporting the client's recovery process through listening, encouraging, validating, reflecting, advocating, and providing a safe environment. It is also seen as working with the client on current issues and facilitating a return to pre-trauma functioning.
Essential Responsibilities This includes but is not limited to:
· Provide individual and group counseling to victims of emotional, sexual, physical, psychological, or financial abuse. Flexibility in scheduling of daytime or evening appointments based on client needs.
· Provide advocacy and referrals for social services such as housing, SNAP, or childcare.
· Ensures case documentation is up-to-date, accurate, and reflective of services provided. Files are subject to review every quarter.
· Assist clients in developing safety plans and service plans.
· Provide on-call shelter coverage for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shifts, which may include weekends.
· Holiday rotation for agency coverage.
· Respond to hospitals or law enforcement agencies.
· Participate in monthly supervision with direct supervisor and external professional contractor (i.e., agency will provide financial coverage for external supervision).
· Participate in outreach events and/or give public education presentations to the community.
· Attend required trainings and regularly scheduled program/all-staff meetings.
· Crisis intervention.
Other Responsibilities · Local travel to client appointments is required; possible out-of-state travel may also be needed.
· Supports and follows agency policies and procedures; complies with confidentiality.
· Maintains professional relationships with agency staff and clients.
· Participates in ongoing professional development requirements.
· Meets deadlines for clerical tasks.
· Maintains agency records and workspace in an orderly fashion.
· Represents the agency at stakeholder and community meetings.
· Serves as a Mandated Reporter.
· Other duties as assigned by Program Manager.
Qualification Requirements · Bachelor's Degree (recommended) in social/human services or at least one year experience in a social work setting.
· Ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with teammates.
· Excellent written, verbal, and counseling communication skills.
· Successful completion of sixty hour combined Domestic/Sexual Violence training by an ICDVP certified training site.
· Experience, ability, and willingness to communicate and work well with survivors from a variety of racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds and with various religious beliefs, lifestyles, sexual orientations, age variance, and differing abilities.
· Ability to maintain professional boundaries and agency confidentiality.
· Possession of a valid Illinois Driver's License and proof of insurance.
· Reliable means of transportation
· Proficiency with computer and software applications utilized by the agency.
· Be able to comply and pass a background check with a drug test.
