Job DescriptionThe Office of Research and Innovation's Electronic Research Administration (ERA) team is searching for a Software Developer who is an expert in PHP and Java EE, to work closely with diverse development teams to develop enterprise, web-based software solutions. This position will be responsible for maintaining, designing, developing, and testing web-based software products, including multi-page applications (MPA) and browser-side single-page applications (SPA). This will include developing software in both the backend and front-end of each product, including databases, web services, and various front-end technologies. In addition, this position will be responsible for integrating products with a diverse set of existing enterprise information systems (EIS), databases (SQL and other non-SQL), and other data sources by sending and receiving data via web services, messaging, and direct access.The position is based in Blacksburg, VA and is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with an expectation of a weekly onsite presence in office. Specific details of that arrangement to be confirmed upon hire.Required Qualifications• Advanced degree in computer science or related field with progressive development experience or bachelor's degree with significant professional experience developing software using the Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP (LAMP) stack as well as modern Java EE (EE 7+) or other Java-based web application development frameworks (e.g. Spring Framework, JBoss Seam)• Demonstrated experience designing and developing enterprise level web applications and services• Demonstrated proficiency in a wide range of programming languages to include PHP, Python, Java• Extensive professional experience developing rich user interfaces in the browser using frameworks such as React and Angular, as well as HTML5, CSS, JavaScript• Extensive experience in test-driven development practices• Demonstrated proficiency in database design; working knowledge of SQL databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle• Demonstrated ability in planning, communicating, and achieving development goals• Ability to comprehend, maintain, and enhance large software products despite the original code author not being on the team• Experience working on project teams that utilize Scrum as their Agile approach to software development;• Strong skills in open and proactive communication, self-motivation, creativity, and problem-solving, all while working across multidisciplinary teams or independently.Preferred Qualifications• Significant professional experience developing and testing software using the LAMP stack and Java EE for web application development;• Experience with enterprise integration strategies and system integration protocols (e.g. REST/SOAP web services, messaging, and direct SQL/LDAP) that enable high-data throughput between systems in various data formats;• Experience with Integrated Development Environments (e.g. Intellij)• Experience with Gitlab CI/CD pipelines;• Experience with AWS cloud computing platform (S3, Lambda, CloudFront, IAM, SNS, SQS, CloudWatch, etc.);• Working knowledge of application configuration and deployment of PHP applications in Apache httpd and deployment of Java EE applications in Wildfly (e.g. JBoss AS 7+);Appointment TypeRegularSalary InformationStarting at $95,000; commensurate with experienceReview DateApril 15, 2024Additional InformationThe position is based in Blacksburg, VA and is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with an expectation of a weekly onsite presence in office.
