The WSU barley breeding and molecular genetics program is focused on the improvement and release of barley varieties within the malt, feed, food and forage classes. These efforts focus on genetic improvement of high yielding and quality varieties adapted to the diverse growing regions of Washington state and the Pacific Northwest. The program relies on our state of the art molecular and malt quality analysis lab which allows us to utilize genetic and genomic data for marker assisted and genomic selection. The program also conducts basic and applied research into important quality and disease resistance genes through gene discovery and functional analysis that can be translated to the field by the release of high yielding varieties with excellent quality and effective and durable genetic resistances. Summary of Duties:
The Scientific Assistant position is responsible for performing laboratory, field, and greenhouse research in support of the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences. The duties of position include but are not limited to: planning and executing scientific experiments; reviewing and interpreting data; developing annual reports and completing grant applications; training, advising, and leading a variety of research personnel involved with the research; and performing other duties as required.
Research Assessment | 40%
Collect, analyze, interpret, present, and publish research activities. Prepare project reports and summaries. Input data into computer and analyze using the appropriate statistical design. Co-author publications and grant applications. Develop drafts of annual reports, grant applications, variety release publications, and Plant Variety Protection documentation. Interpret results to identify experimental lines for advancement and for variety release and to implement improved research methodologies. Attend and/or present results at seminars, technical meetings, field days, etc. Oversee expenditures. Consult with scientists or technical personnel outside the barley breeding program concerning interdisciplinary projects.
Experiment Planning | 40%
Responsible for details in planning and execution of scientific experiments related to cultivar development and genetics research and identify needs for advancement of novel techniques and procedures to meet research objectives. Design applied scientific experiments and interpret the resulting data, while supervising graduate students and undergraduate students involved with the experience. Assist collaborators and visiting scientists and other constituents with research questions and problem solving. Investigate and develop new technologies in electronic data collection and communication to increase productivity. Conduct literature research to obtain information regarding new experimental techniques, software, and equipment. Improve efficacy of research methods regarding equipment, facilities, and space availability.
Supervise | 15%
Train, advise, and lead other research personnel, support graduate students, undergraduate students, and temporary employees. Supervise personnel in the use, operation, calibration, and maintenance of project equipment. Manage work schedules and personnel issues. Instruct faculty and staff in the safe use of field research equipment. Modify or provide specifications to improve experimental equipment. Provide technical knowledge on research and equipment issues.
Miscellaneous Duties | 5%
Order supplies, chemicals, and equipment necessary to insure the program functions efficiently. Participate in and/or lead field tours, workshops, technical meetings, pesticide training sessions, and departmental committee meetings when requested. Work independently in field, lab, and greenhouse collecting data using a wide variety of equipment or other duties as required. Required Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline and three (3) years of progressively responsible related professional research experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
A Master's degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline may be substituted for up to one year of the required work experience.
Must possess, or be able to obtain at time of hire, a valid driver's license.
Must obtain and maintain a valid Public Pesticide Applicator's license.
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
Demonstrated experience coordinating and facilitating work activities in a timely and efficient manner.
Demonstrated ability to perform mechanical service on small plot field research equipment.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110 , the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
