Primary Function of Organizational Unit : East Carolina University is a public doctoral/research university in Greenville, North Carolina, with an enrollment of nearly 29,000 students. The School of Theatre and Dance, in the College of Fine Arts and Communication, has an enrollment of over 250 Acting, Dance Performance and Choreography, Design and Production, Musical Theatre, Stage Management, Theatre Arts Education, and Theatre for Youth Majors and Minors with over 30 Faculty and Staff. The School is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre. Job Duties : The School of Theatre and Dance is looking to hire a temporary, 9-month, Piano Accompanist for the ******** School Year starting in August 2024.
This position is a collaborative, dynamic, and student-centered position that is imperative to support our rigorous academic training for our Dance and Theatre students and presenting professional-level productions to the ECU community and greater Eastern North Carolina region through our ECU/Loessin Playhouse Series. This position serves as a Dance Accompanist for our unit. The position provides critical EHRA non-teaching services to three vital, mission-related specific units of the School of Theatre and Dance – BFA Dance Performance degree, BFA Musical Theatre degree, and to the co-curricular production mission for the SOTD's ECU/Loessin Playhouse and Dance Theatre.
Responsibilities will include improvised and/or composed piano/percussion accompaniment for Dance Classes; and additional duties as assigned by the School's Director.
This position is contingent upon available funding. Minimum Education/Experience : Bachelors of Music degree or related area sufficient to demonstrate technical and artistic skills in music theory, composition, sight-reading, arranging and improvisation.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation : Not applicable.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education : Advanced proficiency in piano playing with the ability to sight-read music fluently and accurately, in addition to being comfortable playing percussion or other instrumentation. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with dance faculty. Proficiency in improvisation to create original musical compositions and accompaniments that support and enhance the creative process of choreography and dance improvisation.
