CLASS TITLE : Media Arts and Theatre Technician (1.0/12 month) TITLE CODE : K2707 GRADE: 09/ESPBC ($27.54-$46.19) Hourly Base Pay Scale for Non-Exempt Office Professionals, Clerical, and Classified Employees Represented by ESPBC Effective July 1, 2023). DEFINITION : Provide expertise, service, and support in the use of specialized equipment for visual and performing arts instructional programs. Work closely with classroom teachers and school-based teacher leaders to effectively use and maintain media arts, lighting, and audio equipment. Collaborate with instructional leadership teams to monitor and evaluate technical equipment needs and make recommendations to support Visual and Performing Arts instruction. Provide oversight for the safe operation and maintenance of theatrical lighting, sound, rigging, video projection and related equipment and systems used in support of staging musical productions, drama productions, music concerts, dance performances, exhibitions, meetings, and related events. Facilitate ongoing, job-embedded professional learning. Perform other duties as assigned. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES : Prepares bid specifications for ordering machines, specialized equipment, hand tools and supplies for Visual and Performing Arts instruction and works within set budgets. Provides training at school sites in the operation of lighting, sound, and other equipment in auditoriums and instructional spaces. Assists the office of Performing Arts to facilitate and implement the technical aspects of districtwide events in collaboration with the identified school sites and the office of Visual Arts. Demonstrates and ensures proper use of new equipment. Identifies safety hazards and takes corrective action. Advises and/or assists teachers with the installation or replacement of parts. Identifies key staff and students and provides training in technical equipment and processes. Ensures crews have adequate knowledge of productions, theatre use and equipment for all events. Develops potential need for specialized equipment and ensures present equipment is maintained. Assists leadership with oversight for acquiring instructional materials and supplies and technical equipment. Researches cost and quantity comparisons and determine economical units. Prepares requisitions, evaluates vendor substitutions, and tracks lost, damaged and back-ordered items. Determines spare parts that should be maintained and establishes list of acceptable substitute parts. Provides and maintains inventory systems. Determines surplus items and provides for redistribution of surplus. Identifies obsolete materials and equipment and arranges for disposal. Organizes annual safety checks of all technical equipment, machines, furniture, fixtures, and fittings. Performs additional duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Education, Training and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Five years' experience in technical theatre operations, performing arts, or a related field.
Associate of Arts degree in technical theatre or related field is preferred. Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent is required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Operational characteristics and techniques used in production lighting, sound, and rigging equipment.
Operations, services, and activities of technical operations for theatre programs.
Principles, methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in technical operations.
Principles and practices of sound engineering.
Principles and practices of stage lighting.
Methods and techniques in maintaining, installing, and repairing electrical and mechanical equipment used in stage-productions. (This does not extend to maintenance and repair where a licensed electrician is required.)
Principles and practices of theatrical stage rigging.
Theatre pre-performance, performance, and post-performance activities as well as supervise and organize strike, and return of rented materials in conjunction with the Office of the Performing Arts
A basic competency in stage carpentry, and working experience of scenic design and construction, is recommended.
A working knowledge of digital sound desks is recommended.
A working knowledge of digital lighting desks is recommended.
A working knowledge of digital editing and compositing for both still image and moving picture formats is recommended. PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
The duties of this class entail the lifting and carrying of objects such as construction equipment, computers, lighting, and related system hardware components. Duties entail frequent visits to school and office sites throughout Baltimore County. FLSA STATUS : Non-exempt Eligible for the Baltimore County Employees' Retirement System
This class specification defines the types of duties and level of difficulty of work required of positions in this title. Pre-Employment Requirements All persons employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools, regular and temporary, are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background investigation (State of Maryland, Senate Bill 315, effective October 1, 1986) completed. The fee charged for fingerprinting is $109.00. An identification card will be issued which must be shown prior to employment. Anyone offered employment is required to provide proper identification and documentation of eligibility for employment in the US. If you have military experience you will be asked to provide a copy of DD214. Official transcripts for all higher education must be received prior to hire. Some positions will require employees to undergo a physical examination and/or drug testing. All newly hired personnel must attend a Badges and Benefits session.
